tional $100,000 appropriation for
its office in Bucharest, Rumania,
for the purpose of aiding Jewish
emigrants bound for Israel, it was
announced by Samuel A. Telsey,
president of the Society.
Telsey said that the exodus of
Rumanian Jews destined for
homes in Israel will continue at
the rate of about 4,000 per month
this summer, and that the HIAS
office in Bucharest, lone Jewish
migration agency assisting emi-
grants in Rumania at this time,
has been faced with a staggering
problem of helping migrants in
their documentation, baggage,
and transportation to the Con-
stantza port of embarkation.

communication from the 111AS
director in Bucharest which out-
lined the anticipated demands on
the Society in the ensuing
months, and pointing out that
"nearly all Israel-bound emi-
grants from Rumania pass
through Bucharest, and because
of their destitute condition, re-
quire aid before sailing for the
new Jewish state."
At the same time, Telsey re-
vealed that arrangements had
been completed in Tel Aviv
whereby $500,000 of HIAS funds
would be used towards the recep-
tion and integration of Polish
Jews arriving in Israel, under an
agreement between Poland and
Israel for the movement of some
20,000 persons from Polish cities
to the new state by September of
this year.
Knesset Votes
Budg et of
$166,000,000
TEL AVIV — (Special) — The
Israeli parliament passed, 44 to
25, a $166,000,000 budget financed
by internal revenue, which cov-
ers all ordinary state expendi-
tures except part of the security
budget financed from secret
sources.
The defense appropriation in
the ordinary budget is $40,000,-
000, or double that of last year.
It was explained that this does
not mean that the government is
spending more money on defense
but that a larger share of the
security costs is being financed
by internal revenue.
The government hopes this
year to cover the entire security
budget from local sources, includ-
ing loans.
The Knesset also estimated
higher income from taxes, to be
raised partly by increasing the
excise duties on tobacco and al-
coholic drinks, luxury taxes and
by a new tax on travel abroad.
