Community Council Hits Housing Bias

Bnai Brith East Side Women
to Honor Mrs. Robert Coggan

Dr. B. Benedict Glazer appear-
ed as the spokesman of the Jew-
ish Community Council at a
stormy three-hour hearing before
the Detroit Common Council
March 10 on the question of the
rezoning of the site planned for
development by the Schoolcraft
Gardens Cooperative.
The area, a 70-acre tract in the
vicinity of Schoolcraft avenue
and Telegraph road, had been
zoned three years ago to permit
the kind of multiple dwelling
unit construction that the Co-
operative projected.

Detroit Bnai Brith's Women
Council, at a reception at 8:30

p.m., Monday at the home of
Mrs. Nathan Abrams, 871 Lake-
pointe avenue, Grosse Pointe.
Mrs. Coggan, was the first
president and organizer of the
East Side Chapter.
She helped to organize the De-
troit District Dental Auxiliary
and is a charter member of the
group. She is a member of the
national committee of the Joint
Defense Appeal, and %vie; recent-
ly appointed to the executive
committee of the Michigan Anti-
Defamation League regional
board.
During the war, Mrs. Coggan
was actively engaged in war
bond drives and USO work, and
was awarded a government cita-
tion for her war service.
Currently, Mrs. Coggan is
working with the Red Cross to
establish a blood bank donated
by Jews of Detroit. She has also
donated her services to the De-
troit Community Fund, Allied

A change in plans makes it
necessary for Chapter One, ZOD,
to announce the new subject for
its Oneg Shabbat, Friday. Instead
of "Israeli Food," the subject will
be the "Theater in Israel."

Vona Yoshpe of Israel, who is
in the U. S. to study medical
'technology at Henry Ford Hospi-
tal, will bring first-hand informa-
tion and pictures of Habimah and
other groups in the Israeli thea-
ter. Group singing of Hebrew
songs will follow the talk.
The meeting has been planned
by Tybie Schneider, education
committee chairman, and will be
held at 8:30 pm , at the hdme of
Jennie Weiss, 3798 Wager.
