How to Recognize Jewish Anti-Semite
In the October issue of its ''Council News," the American
Council for Judaism brags of the fact that the recent editorial
written by Rabbi Elmer Berger on "How to Recognize Jewish
Nationalism" received favorable comment from many Americans..
The trick used by the council is to write an article or letter
and then send it to hundreds of Christians. Usually the council
receives two or three favorable comments and then it reprints those
to show how well its articles are received by Christians.
We would like to print a little article on how to recognize a
member of the American Council for Judaism. However, we won't
submit it to any of our Christian friends; this is only for Jewish
consumption:
I. He either isn't affiliated with any Temple or Synagogue
Ins, if he is he takes little active part.
2. He knows very little about Judaism and the only way he
can define it is: "A good old religion." (See Mr. Lilienthal's article
in the Reader's Digest.)
3. He doesn't have a Jewish library in his home, and if there
are a few books that happen to have gotten in his home by acci-
dent, he never reads them.
4. He couldn't pass a' test on the Bible or on Jewish history to
any intelligible degree.
5. He immediately turns off the radio if the music or the
speech should be in Hebrew or Yiddish because he doesn't like
"that stuff."
6. He shudders when he sees a bearded Jew and will refuse
to sit next to one if he should have to ride in a street car (which
is very seldom).
7. He refuses to give to charity on the grounds that it goes to
"nationalist Jews" but it is only an excuse not to give.
8. He belongs to as many country clubs as he can get into and
takes particular pride if he can get into some Gentile ones.
9. He is ashamed of his own birthright and speaks only in
terms of integration but what he actually means is assimilation.
Why Not a Butzel Avenue?
In recent years two great men of note passed from our midst.
We refer to Dr. Leo M. Franklin lied Fred Butzel. While both were
recognized and honored during their lifetimes and while certain
memorials were set up for them since their passing, it was only
recently that the deeds and accomplishment of one of them was
recognized in a manner befitting his memory. Dr. Franklin will
lie memorialized with a chair on humane relations at Wayne
University.
As to Fred Butzel, nothing on a large scale has been dune in
this community to perpetuate his name. The Chronicle believes
that it is the responsibility of the city of Detroit to give fitting
recognition to Fred Butzel by naming an avenue or a street after
him.
We note that 6 Mile road was changed to McNichols road in
honor of a great Catholic. Perhaps it would be appropriate to
change 7 Mile road to Butzel road. McNichols is particularly noted
or the fact that the U. of D. and Marygrove, large Catholic insti-
qitions, are centered on that thoroughfare. Seven Mile may be
toted for the fact that it is becoming a great center of Jewish
oophlation.
•
We will be glad to join with any committee to try to get our
city council to effect such a change. We are sure it will receive
popular support.
Four Walls and a Roof
Four walls and a roof—sounds like a simple goal. even in
these days of limited housing. But that is the single greatest need
of the new American families who are now arriving in Detroit at
the rate of 20 to 30 monthly.
Most of these families are young couples, survivors of their
own families who have met and married in DP camps since the
war. They have had enough courage and faith in the future to
have children—most of them have at least one and many have two
or three—and to trust their luck in a new, strange country.
The principal stumbling block in the way of their permanent,
secure settlement here is the lack of housing—of a room for a
couple, of an apartment or flat for couples with children.
If you know of an existing vacancy or of an anticipated one,
you can help a new American family to feel at home at last by
calling Esthet. Adler at Resettlement Service, TR. 2-4080. These
refugee families can afford only low-cost housing, of course, and
they prefer to be in Jewish neighbor hoods, but, out of the 200
families to come here in the next year, Resettlement Service will
know of one who can make good use of any vacancy referred to
Miss Adler.
GE Executive Honored
The Detroit Round Table of Catholics, Protestants and Jews
will give its Humanitarian Award this year to Charles E. Wilson,
president of General Electric Co. and co-chairman of the National
Conference of Christians and Jews.
Thousands of citizens join in applauding this award, for
Charles E. Wilson is the rare combination of the man who has
reached financial summits and yet has retained his concern for
the common man.
One of Wilson's most notable achievements was his activity as
chairman of President Truman's civil rights committee. The report
that he issued is considered a masterpiece and certainly reflects
his liberal character. We heartily indorse the recognition given
to Charles E. Wilson.

NEW YORK.—A declaration of

ish Committee which may mark
a turning point in the history of

reaching effects on American
Jewish life in general has been
issued by the executive commit-
tee after a two-day session in
Chicago.
The gathering dealt with re-
cent "statements from Zionist
and anti-Zionist groups which
were giving the American public dlij
the impression that Israel was in-
tervening in the internal affairs
of American Jews and impugning
their patriotism and loyalty."
While the resolution included
also a rebuke of the American
Council for Judaism, it was de-
voted primarily to the statement
by Premier Ben Gurion of Aug.
31, concerning the immigration of
American Jewish youth to Israel
and to similar statements by lead-
ers of the Zionists movement m
America which "have caused
grave concern, as possibly open
to an interpretation inconsistent
with the principles (of the AJC)."
