sent to the UN. The Arab dele-
gates had no less a case than
Israel and they defended it with
no less sincerity and conviction.
To stand before the bar of such
a select body of men, the cream
of western civilization—not all of
them friendly and a good many
of them outspoken enemies, and
carry the day as did Major Eban,
was a task for which few Jews
could qualify.
Not that Jews have no great
orators, statesmen and gifted,
clever men. Dr. Abba Hillel Sil-
ver easily surpasses Major Eban
in eloquence. Dr. Chaim Weiz-
niann is probably a greater states-
man. Moshe Sharett presented
the case of Israel in the earlier
stages of the UN fight with no
less skill and ardor than did
Major Eban.
FOR ONE MUST NOT forget
that the UN platform is one of
the most difficult and critical in
the world, more so than that of
any parliament. The delegates
are mostly men of highest culture
and training: clever men, educat-

ONE COULD NOT ESCAPE a
feeling of great irony of fate while
listening to Major Eban speak.
Great Britain, of whom a good
many Jews cannot speak without
foaming at the mouth, this Eng-
land has forged the tool with
which Israel has won its greatest
victories in the field of diplomacy
and international affairs.
For everything about Eban is
English, not Israeli, nor even
Jewish. His Oxford accent, the
lucidity of his thoughts, the re-
straint with which he controls his
inner passion from running away
into excitability and grandilo-
quence, his ability to see the jus-
tice of an opponent's point of
view without brushing it aside
as a fanatic, all these are gifts
which he and most of the Israeli
diplomats have taken from Eng-
land, from its gforious language
culture and the great Anglo-
Saxon tradition of liberalism.
This, incidentally, is true not
only of the Jews, but of the
Arabs, the Indians, the Irish and
all the other "enemies" of Eng-

IRONY OF FATE
NEW YORK—(YIVNA)—Of all
the public men that the new
Jewish State has brought forth
during the two years of its forma-
tion and emergence, Major Aub-
rey Eban occupies the most im-
portant place.
He was unknown in this coun-
try before the UN session of the
fall of 1947. Since then, his abil-
ity as a diplomat, his eloquence
as a speaker, the logic of his ar-
guments and the sincerity of his
speeches have gained for him the
admiration of many people who
have followed his activities in the
UN. That admiration reached its
highest point when he led the
fight of Israel for admission to
the UN.
Anyone who heard his famous
speech pleading for Israel's ad-
mission and followed his numer-
ous other speeches under the cross
examination of the enemies could
not help feeling that the case of
Israel was in the hands of the
right man and that probably no
one else could have done better
than he did in carrying out his
great task under such difficult
circumstances.
