Israel Greets
World Jewry

NEW YORK—Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann, .president of Israel, has is-
sued the following Rosh Hashonah
message:
"I send greetings from the State
of Israel to the Jewish People the
world over on the occasion of
Rosh Hashonah, which we are cel-
ebrating for the second time as
a free people in our own land.
"Our people have known great
suffering; with suffering was the
State established. From sacrifice
and anguish was freedom fashion-
ed and sovereignty secured.
"Today in peace we seek only
to pursue the constructive tasks
of building the country, develop-
ing the resources of the homeland
that our people may enjoy a full
life and walk in dignity.
"Our danger is not yet over.
But without an hour's interrup-
tion we follow Zion's purpose—
welcoming back our brethren
from overseas, reviving both the
State and the nation.
"We fervently hope we will be
blessed in the New. Year with
the means of setting the new
State on the path of economic,
social and cultural fulfillment,
that Israel may serve as a source
of strength and inspiration to all
Jews.
"May our people in all their
dispersion join to achieve this
holy purpose; may our toil be
blessed. Heartfelt greetings to
every Jew wherever he may be."

Greetings for New Year
Extended by Kleinman

Dr. Shmarya Kleinman, presi-
dent of the Community Council,
issued the fellowing message on
the occasion of New Year 5710:
"On the threshold of the year
5710—the year of spiritual and
physical reconstruction of the
sacred remnants of European
Jewry, now partly transplanted
to the waiting soil of Israel, the
Jewisb Community Council of
Detroit greets the whole com-
munity.
REPRESENT 250 GROUPS
"The Council, the delegates as-
sembly representing over 250 lo-
cal Jewish organizations—mem-
bers of the Council, and the staff
rededicate themselves to the
cause of a better, a fuller, and
more harmonious life as Jews and
as Americans.
"We rededicate ourselves to the
advancement of better under-
standing of Jews by all of our
neighbors in Detroit. We rededi-
cate ourselves to the advance-
ment of Jewish cultural values,
without which the dignity of the
Jewish community becomes hol-
low.
"We rededicate ourselves to
further the efforts towards genu-
uine and self-respecting unity
within the Jewish community,
without subjugation and with a
full respect• for the functions of
organizations operating on the
Jewish scene.
"We shall continue the defense
of the principles of American de-
mocracy, whose roots spring from
an even older democracy found
in the ancient traditions of
Judaism.
GUARD CIVIL RIGHTS
"Because of this belief in the
primacy of the democratic way
of life, we should continue to
recognize that the abrogation of
the civil rights of any individual
or group, even those with whom
we basically disagree, is a danger-
ous breach in the protecting cita-
del of civil liberties erected by
the constitution.
"Denial of the rights of one
