Hadassali's

"A 2,000 year old dream come
true." was the characterization
given Israel by Mrs. Samuel Hal-
perin, national president of Ha-
dassah, speaking to hundreds of
members of the Detroit chapter
at its opening luncheon on Tues-
day, Sept. 13.
The implementation of this
dream on the part of the mem-
bership was urged by Mrs. Theo-
dore Bargman, chapter president.
and Mrs. Alfred Meyers, who is
heading the current Honor Roll
campaign.
Gifts of small amounts by large
numbers of women are needed as
much as contributions by large
givers, .it was pointed out.
The zeal of the general solici-
tors has sent the percentage of
slips covered soaring, and at this
point the campaign seems well
on the way to a successful con-
clusion, Mrs. Meyers stated.
Chairmen for the general soli-
citation in the various groups
are: Central West, Mrs. Aaron
Friedman; Russell Woods, Mrs.
Sander Hillman; University East,
Mrs. Abe Katzman, Mrs. Saris

WARSAW—(World News Serv-
icest—The number of Jews in
Poland is a frequent topic of cal-
culations in the foreign press;
80.000, 60,000 and even less is
given as the exact figure.
According to the latest data, the
figure is about 100,000. This fig-
ure is based on the number of
Passover holidays when Matzos
applications received during the
were being distributed to the
Jews.
Over 90,000 Jews were register-
ed, all of whom bore proper iden-
tification cards which are minute-
ly examined by a combined com-
mittee of representatives from
the Jewish Central Committee,
Board of Jewish Congregations
and Joint Distribution Commit-
tee.
Of this number 5,162 were
registered in Warsaw, 13,690 in
Lodz, 6,000 in Szczecin and 45,000
in Lower Silesia.
nationalized industries of Lodz
and Upper Silesia.
The Jewish cooperative move-
ment greatly 'expanded in 1948.
The central board of the Jewish
productive cooperatives now em-
braces 220 cooperatives with over
9,000 workers and it is calcu-
lated that that contingent will
reach 12,000 in 1949.
SHOW BIG PROFITS
Most of the cooperatives are
well ogranized unit: with 100 .to
300 members, thoroughly sound
economically. In 1948 the capital
stock amounted to 3.5 times as
much as in 1947, and within the
last two years it became 34 times
higher than the initial capital.
Working capital jumped from
three million zlotys at the end
of 1946 to 16 million during 1947
and to 59 million at the end of
1948, which means that it was 20
times the amount of 1946.
Some of the Jewish coopera-
tives are considered examples of
that type of enterprise. The gar-
ment cooperative "Jednosc" in
1948 had a turnover of 121 mil-
lion zlotys , a 12 million profit
and employed 250 persons.
The shoemaking cooperative
"Olgin" has 270 workers. 65 mil-
lion turnover and a profit of 4.5
milljon zlotys. The shoemaking
cooperative "Zgoda" in Wroclaw
had 288 employees, 155 million
zlotys turnover and eight million
profit.
