Report New Red Deportation
of Jews; Soviet Denies Story

TEL AVIV— (WNS) —Private
reports which have reached here
state that Jews in Bessarabia and
northern Bukowina, territories
which came under Russian rule
since the war, were a month ago
deported en masse to Siberia
after they registered for emigra-
tion to Israel.
The reports state that between
July 10-20 all Jews in the cities
of Kishinev and Czernowitz who
had so registered were dis-
patched to the Murmansk area in
the Arctic region.
(In Washington this week the
Soviet Embassy denied reports of
the mass deportation of Soviet
Jews to Arctic concentration
camps, saying that such reports
were "as fantastic as many stories
of that kind.")
The majority of the Jewish
population of the two territories,
it is stated, had registered for
migration to the Jewish State,
after Soviet authorities in the
two capital cities of Kishinev and
Czernowitz had announced on
July 1 that Jews wishing to emi-
grate to Israel could register with
the local authorities.
The reports further say that
panic is spreading in the Roman-
ian part of Bubowina among

tion was prohibited.

It is also noted here that rela-
tives in Israel of Jews in Bess-
arabia and Bukowina have not
been receiving any mail from
these areas during the past sev-
eral months.
