Oh, That Fox Fight

Members of the Department of

guests of the newly-organized

was headed by Arlene Rhodes,

was sel-
ected as the winner of the $2,500 fellowship for
one year's study and work in Israel by the
Michigan Zionist Region, Dr. A. M. Hershman,
chhirman of the regional fellowship committee,
announced. Yanich is Detroit director of Young

national winners about June 15. Members of the

THE FIGHTS WERE all good
ones, and when Jake beat Robin-

accounted for the lone setback on
"Sugar's" professional record.
Since those lush days, however,
Jake has not been doing so well.
Late in 1947 he lost to one Cecil
Hudson in Chicago. Following
that, he was TKO'd by Billy Fox
at the Garden in a strange exhi-
bition.

Loses to Villemain

IT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY re-
vealed that Jake had gone into
the ring with a ruptured spleen,
hardly a condition conducive to
physical well-being *ith a right-
hander of "Blackjack" Billy's cal-
iber.
After his suspension was lifted
(because of the Fox fiasco) Jake

Take That! And That!

VILLEMAIN'S CLAIM to fame
Is that he, like Cerdan, is a
Frenchman. That's as far as the
similarity. goes. Although a good
earnest fighter, and one who has
-. proven that he can take a good
deal of punishment, he is hardly
in the same class with the Casa-
blanca walloper, Cerdan.
And so, Cerdan and La Motta
will mix it for the middleweight
championship of the world in two
weeks,

Gershwin Chapter

RED SMITH of the Herald
Trib, and at times a person of
great humor, has this, in pait, to
say about the match, and I quote;
"For a La Motta fight, Detroit has
several advantages not shared by
other cities. For one thing, it is
631 miles from Columbus Circle.
For another, it is equipped with
a tunnel that permits easy, rapid
flight into Canada."
