The convention, one of the
most dramatic in the history of
the organization, adopted a series
of resolutions, among them one
calling on the United Jewish Ap-
peal to allocate $2,000,000 for re-.
legious and cultural institutions
in Israel. Another empowered the
council's executive committee to
send a delegation to confer with
the Chief Rabbi of Israel on plans
for a world Rabbinical confer-
ence.
The highlight of the convention
was a charge by Dr. Tabak that
a systematic campaign was "being
carried on to suppress the re-
ligious, social and cultural life
of the Jewish people in Poland,
Romania, Hungary and other
countries under Soviet domina-
tion."
He said it was ironic that the
forces of the Soviet Union that
"saved these people from the
clutches of the Nazi murderers
should now compel them to die a
spiritual death." If there is no
room for Judaism and for Jewish
culture in those countries, he de-
clared, "let the authorities re-
move the iron bars, which have
been used more rigorously of late,
and permit all those wishing to
go to emigrate to Israel,"
Israeli Chief Rabbi Isaac Halevi
Herzog, speaking of the forth-
coming Rabbinical conference in
Jerusalem, urged the delegates to
join forces with the religious bloc
in Israel. At the same time the
convention approved a resolution
calling on American Jewry to
recognize the Israeli Chief Rab-
binate as the central religious
authority for world Jewry.
The family of the late Alex-
ander Weiss announce the unveil-
ing of a monument in his memory
at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 12 at the
Independent Detroit Lodge Ceme-
tery, 14 1/2 Mile road and Gratiot.
Rabbi Harry Greenfield will
officiate. All friends and rela-
tives are requested to meet at
1 p.m., at the Jewish Cultural
Bldg., 2705 Joy road.
