which began only five minutes
late and was over in two hours.
Ben Zion Ilan, representative
of the Israeli embassy in Wash-
ington, told the multitude that
"virtually from the gas chambers
a new State was created."
MILESTONE FOR THE AGES
"Israel," Ilan said, "will be re-
membered not only as an his-
toric phenomenon but its estab-
lishment will be recalled as a
milestone in the triumphal prog.
ress of the spirit of Man."
Children participated in the
celebration with recitations and
group singing. An honor guard
of the Jewish War Veterans car-
ried the American flag to the
platform while the audience
stood at attention. The flag of
Israel was then carried to a place

justice and democracy."

MORE THAN $60,000 was raised for the Allied Jewish Campaign
when Chief Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog of Israel addressed a dinner
of orthodox leaders here. He is shown with Abe Kittle, a cam-
paign vice-chairman, left. and Louis Berry, general chairman,
right. The Chief Rabbi delighted the overflow throng with his
old-fashioned charm, his folksy, old-country Yiddish and hi per-
fect, British-accented English. "Recognize the Jewish nation with
all your substance," he urged his audience, "and give more than
last year." As a result most announced gifts were increases.
With but 47 percent of the slips
covered, the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign has passed the $4,000.000
mark. The goal is $6,395,000.
The closing assembly of the
drive will be on Tuesday, May 31
at the Center. Top solicitors in
