Execution of 7
inIragDoAted
WASHINGTON (WNS)—As in-
dignation rose in the Jewish
community over the reported ex-
ecution of seven Jews in Iraq on
mere charges they were harbor-
ing Zionist sentiments, a spokes-
man for the State Department
declared that, according to a re-
port received from Edward S.
Crocker, American ambassador to
Iraq, the men were tried and
sentenced in absentia.
However, the names of the men
mentioned were not identical
with the original list and there
was speculation on whether the
report referred to the seven in
question or to other men.
Protests against the reported
executions were filed with the
State Department by several
leading Jewish national organiza-
tions. The World Jewish Congress
has pressed an appeal to the
United Nations and to the Ameri-
can and Israeli governments for
action to halt persecution of Jews
in Iraq and in the rest of the
Moslem countries.
An appeal for U. S. interven-
tion was made by Dr. Abba Hillel
Silver, as chairman of the Ameri-
can Zionist Emergency Council,
in a wire to Secretary of State
Acheson.
Detroit Women's Division of the American Jewish Congress
celebrated a double holiday this last week. The organization
paid tribute to Dr. Stephen S. Vise, president of the Congress,
on his 75th birthday, and celebrated Purim with a donation of
Shalach Monos to the Dearborn Veterans hospital at a Purim
party. Members are shown distributing gifts. They are, left to
right: Mrs. Janice Mendelsohn, Mrs. Edith Frank, Mrs. Ida
. Smokier, Mrs. Nathan Bright and Mrs. Mollie Stross, At the
extreme right is Sam Brown, regional executive director. Others
in the photo are patients.
