FCC Puts Off
Richards Quiz
WASHINGTON (Special) — A
hearing on alleged distortion of
news by radio stations controlled
by G. A. Richards has been in-
definitely postponed by the Fed-
eral Communications Commis-
sion.
The action took place when the
FCC received Richards' offer to
surrender his voting control in
the three stations involved—WJR,
Detroit: KMPC, Los Angeles; and
WGAR, Cleveland.
Burton K. Wheeler, Richards'
attorney, wrote the commission
that the nearing if carried out
would "imperil Richards' life" in
view of a long-standing heart ail-
ment.
Richards was accused of direct-
ing his newscasters to slant news
in such a way as to bring disre-
pute upon the members of the
Roosevelt family and upon the
Jewish people. He admitted three
weeks ago "the wrongfulness of
certain acts," saying that "he now
realizes that some groups have
abused his fear of Communism to
their own ends."

LONDON — (Special) — Britain has rejected a Trans-
jordan request that British troops patrol a 50-mile zone on
the Transjordan-Israeli frontier, well informed sources re-
ported. They explained the rejection by conceding that the
assignment of patrol duties to British forces in Aqaba would
increase tension in the Midd e East rather than act as a
stabilizing measure.
Israel took serious note of the
threat to its frontiers. Col. Moshe
Perlman. military spokesman,

Sobeloff Charges 'Threat
by Chronicle in Ad Protest
9
Isidore Sobeloff, executive di-
rector of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, charged in letters
sent to members.. of ,the JWF
board of governors that the Jew-
ish Chronicle had "threatened"
the Federation.
The Chronicle had written So-
beloff that it would publish the
fact that he was subsidizing the
Jewish News again and discrim-
inating against the Jewish Chron-
icle, if he did not stop inserting
paid advertisements in the News
or give the two papers equal
treatment.
USE CHARITY CASH
"There is no reason why the
Federation should be using char-
ity money for advertising of
events which should be published
in the press without charge as a
public obligation," the Chronicle
wrote Sobeloff.
"Despite your unfriendliness to
the Chronicle, we continue to re-
port JWF activities within the
limited space we have. However,
we feel that if you believe adver-
tising important that you give an
equal number of inches to the
Chronicle and the News so that
you cannot be charged justifiably
with attempting to control the
News.
. "WC believe 'that. your contin-
ued subsidization of the News is
unfair and contrary to the wishes
of the majority of your contrib-
utors. You may have the backing
of your executive committee on
this matter, but there, of course,
we differ on whether that should
be decisive.
BASIS OF JUDGMENT
"It is not on the amount of their
contributions, but on the number
of givers who condemn your par-
tiality that you should judge this
matter."
Sobeloff wrote back that he
was "ready to discuss with any of
our contributors questions they
may raise. However, our decision
cannot be based on threats."
Haiti Is 48th State
to Recognize Israel
WASHINGTON (WNS) —The
Israeli embassy disclosed that the
Republic of Haiti had recognized
the new State. Haiti is the 48th
nation to give recognition.
EXPLAIN DIFFICULTY
Butchers headed by David
Krause, their business agent, de-
clared that the board could not
list all prices because those for
special cuts such as aged steaks
would have to be excluded.
Moreover, they assured the Coun-
cil that they would see to it that
all butchers listed prices for all
meats displayed in their count-
ers.
Attending a conference with
the butchers were David Flayer,
assistant prosecuting attorney,
and Mrs. Harry Frank and Mrs.
Rose Singer, representing wom-
en's groups.

SIGN WITH LEBANON
In the meantime, Israel and
Lebanon signed an armistice in
the border town of Has en Nacjara
in the presence of representa-
tives of Dr. Ralph Bunche, the
UN mediator. Syria is expected
to be the next Arab state to enter
negotiations with Israel.
Talks with Transjordan in
Rhodes were beitig slowed up by
the Arab maneuverings. There
had been earlier signs that an
armistice with Transjordan would
be quickly effected since King
Abdullah agreed to truce lines in
the Jerusalem sector with little
opposition.
HIT 'ANNEXATION'
Israel, however, denounced the
report from Amman that King
Abdullah was setting up a civil
administration in all Palestine
areas under his control as "vir-
tual annexation" of territory not
.covered in the talks.
In Tel Aviv, by a vote of 83
to 3 with 19 abstentions, the
Knesset approved the terms of
the $100,000,000 loan from the
U. S.
Speaking in Philadelphia, Rich-
ard Crossman, British M. P., de-
clared that Israel is the only bul-
wark against Communism in the
Middle East.
"Unless Israel is permitted to
establish itself and democracy
firmly, the countries of the Mid-
dle East will go the way of
China," he said.
