7 Leaders Named
to JDA Council

Seven Detroit communal lead-
ers are serving as members of
the national council of the Joint
Defense Appeal, it was an-

nounced.

The JDA, currently seeking a
national goal of ;6,826,115, is the
fund-raising arm of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee and the
Anti-Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, two national agencies de-
voted to fostering intergroup
harmony and combating bigotry.
Detroit leaders who have
agreed to serve are Leo M. But-
zel, Victor Klein, Isadore Levin,
Leonard T. Lewis, Judge Charles
Simons, Joseph M. Welt, and
Henry Wineman.

ART DEADLINE
Original entries by young Jew-
ish artists for the first annual ex-
hibition, Feb. 13-20, must be in
the Center by Feb. 1.

Bevin
Softens

(Continued from Page I)
interruption of the "delicate ne-
gotiations now going on between
Israel and Egypt at Rhodes and
between Israel and Lebanon
and Transjordan."
"We have been using all our
influence, in conjunction with
the U. S., in the hope of arriv-
ing at a complete armistice," he
added. "The main objective of all
concerned must be to secure a
peaceful settlement as soon as
possible."
'REJECT PROTEST
Meantime, Israel formally re-
jected the British protest over
the downing of five RAF planes
over the
Negev
battlefront
Jan. 7. The note was sent
through the good offices of
Trygve Lie, UN secretary gen-
eral, and informed Britain that
she was guilty of "a grave
breach of neutrality" as corro-
borated by the evidence of two
RAF pilots who were captured.
Israel meanwhile, made two
conciliatory gestures to the Bri-
tish and Arabs. The government
informed the British consul gen-
eral in Haifa that two of the
captured RAF pilots would be
released on his request and per-
mitted to return home or to
their base.
The Jews also agreed to al-
low the evacuation of 200 Egyp-
tian wounded from the Faluja
pocket and to permit food and
medicines to reach the trapped
brigade. On Thursday a convoy
of 50 vehicles was permitted to
go through the Israeli lines.
NEW TALKSpSOON
Unconfirmed reports said that
Transjordan had scheduled ar-
mistice talks to start soon in
the Jerusalem area. Informal
discussions have been going on
for some time.
The Israeli note to London
charged that the RAF planes
"did not confine themselves to
reconnaissance ort_the Egyptian
side of the frontier," that they
"were instructed to photograph
Israeli positions," were engaged
over Israeli territory and "car-
ried loaded guns."
Regret was expressed for the
incident and the loss of a Bri-
tish pilot, but responsibility was
placed on "those who ordered
an operation" which was "il-
legitimate and ill-considered."

Orthodox Convalescent
Home Opens in Miami

While Miami Beach boasts
many luxurious Jewish hotels,
not until this season has there
been any effort to establish a
Kosher and modern convales-
cent home.
Thanks to the efforts of a
young Rabbi, Isadore H. Snoul-
son, Shoulson's Dream Haven
Lodge for Convalescence came
into being. A visit to 1681 Meri-
dian avenue, Miami Beach, the
former home and estate of Carl
Fisher, reveals a fully and
modernly equipped home for
convalescents ailing and retired,
where the dietary laws are
strictly observed. The rooms are
spacious, airy and sunny and
tastefully furnished.

CENTER OPEN HOUSE
Tuesday and Thursday will be
open house days for women in the
health education department of
the Center. Time is 7:40 to 9:30

The Los Angeles Telcove
Club's monthly dance, Jan. 30
