Midwest Seminar
to Open Thursday
Rabbi James C. Heller of Cin-
cinnati, who recently quit the
ZOA and joined the Labor Zion-
ist Organization, will address the
first session of the Labor Zionist
winter seminar4or the midwest
region at 8:30 p.m., Thursday, in
the Northwest Hebrew Congrega-
tion.
The second phase of the semin-
ar will open Friday, Dec. 24, at
the Labor Zionist Institute, and
will continue through Sunday.
Heading the list of guest lec-
turers will be Dr. Berl Frymer,
national executive secretary of
the LZOA, and Prof. Chayim
Fineman.
A special presentation by the
Habonim will be featured at the
Friday night Oneg Shabbat.
The seminar is under the direc-
tion of Rabbi Joseph Miller, ex-
ecutive secretary of the region.
Local leaders are Wolf Schneider,
Laibel Iloffnitz, M. Goldoftas, I.
Zemel, Norman Druchler and
Ruth Stein.
Federation Picks
Nomination Body
The appointment of a nomin-
ating committee for the Jewish
Welfare Federation was an-
nounced by Julian H. Krolik,
president. Members are Samuel
H. Ruhiner, chairman; Joseph
Bernstein, Irving W. Blumberg,
Morris Garvett and Mrs. Henry
Wineman.
The committee is charged with
the responsibility of nominating
candidates for nine members-
at-large of the board of gover-
nors to be elected for a three-
year term. The election will
take place at the annual meet-
ing of the Federation in Febru-
ary.
The Federation board consists
of 64 members of whom 27 are
members - at - large and serve
three-year terms. Nine are elect-
ed every year.
Other members of the board
serve a one-year term and rep-
resent social service agencies,
the Detroit Service Group, the
Junior Service Group, the Wonl;
en's Division and organizations.
Included in this last category
are the Greater Detroit Bnai
Brith Council, the Detroit Zion-
ist Council, the United Jewish
Folks Organization, the Jewish
Labor Committee - Workmen's
Circle and the Jewish War
Veterans.
2 Events Slated
at Shaarey Zedek
The next brunch and book
review of the Shaarey Zedek
Sisterhood will take place at
12:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the so-
cial hall.
Miss Zelda Rosenthal will re-
view "Treasury of Jewish Folk-
lore." Mesdames Walter Field
and George Bremen. book re-
view chairmen, announced.
Mrs. Abe Katzman, president,
urges members and friends to

The Young People's Society
of the Synagogue will sponsor a
lecture by Dr. Marion E. Zonnis,
psychiatrist, at 8:30 p.m., Wed-
nesday, in the social hall.

Speaking at the luncheon,
Capt. ' Yaakov Wayland, com-
mander of the Israeli defense
of Negba, paid tribute to the
Histadrut.
"When Premier Ben Gurion
wants to do a big job, he goes
to the Histadrut," Wayland said.
"We arc fighting for the
Negev," he added, "because we
know we can make a flourishing
garden out of the desert sands.
We want peace, and the Negev
is crying for our plows."
