HERE's another Jessel

took a sharp trick once too often
and was shot down.
The funeral was a big affair,
attended by hundreds of his
erstwhile playmates—dice, poker,
stud and pinochle friends. Dur-

A coarse voice from the rear
was heard—"I'll give a hundred

VIENNA (WNS)—An editorial
in the "Wiener Zeitung," govern-
ment organ, warned that Aus-
trian Nazis are working under
cover and are planning a return
to power.
The editorial pointed out that
the Nazis are striving to estab.
lish a new party which will split
the democratic forces in Austria
and are circulating Nazi litera-

A Happy New Year to You Alt

Return to Power

YOU LIKE my pooch,"

said Jessel's sister Annie to the
society leader. And then in an
effort to impress her—"It cost a
thousand dollars. A very rare
breed. Part schnauzer and part
bull."
"'Amazing," clucked the lady.
"and which part is bull."
Annie broke down. "The part
about the thousand dollars," she
confided.

Follows in Tradition
of Men of Theater

MOST OF THE prominent
Jews in the theater world
are known as talented racon-
teurs in private life, gifted with
that amazing and enviable abil-
ity to amuse, instruct and sur-
prise with a few words or an
odd little story.
George Jessel is an ideal ex-
ample of this type of performer
who can also give a good report
of himself in parlor conversa-
tion. He is the admitted compere
of any toastmaster in the coun-
try and a famous master of
ceremonies at an untold number
of functions.
One of his best off-the-stage
stories concerns a day on which
he was rushing to the theater,
so he says.
Suddenly someone rushed up
to the comedian and gave him
a terrific wallop on the back,
yelling in his ear, "Hell000, Mr.
Smoolikov."
The indignant Jessel turned
round in pain.
"I beg your pardon, sir," he
said, "I am George Jessel—I
am not Mr. Smoolikov."
"You're not Smoolikov?" came
the query.
"No," answered Jesse), "And
even if I were Smoolikov, is that
any way to come up behind a
man without warning and hit
him a smash on the back?"
"Are you telling me how I
should act with Smoolikov," the
intruder inquired.
