60 Years of Marriage

A reception will be given
Sunday in the English room of
the Park Avenue Hotel, honor-
ing Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kush-
ner on the occasion of their
60th wedding anniversary.
Among those attending will
be the Kushners' eight children,
15 grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.

A young Detroit artist, Mat-
thew Brener, 24. of 17579 Cher-
rylawn avenue, last week won
first prize of $1,000 for a portrait
entered in the Old Northwest
Territory Art Exhibit.
The painting, entitled "Por-
trait of a Woman," was pur-
chased by the Illinois State Mu-
seum in Springfield.
The contest was open 'to artists
from Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, In-
diana, Wisconsin and Iowa.
Matthew's two brothers, Paul
and Robert, are also well-known
Michigan artists. Paul is on the
staff of the Detroit Times and
Robert is on the art faculty of
the Alabama Polytechnic Insti-
tute (Auburn).
Matthew studied at Wayne
University and Cranbrook Art
Academy.
Max Weber, one of the leading
critics and artists in America,
writing in the Art Digest, said
that "Broner's painting followed
a style of its own," that it was
a "mature, poetic statement" and
that this young artist "should be
given every encouragement."
Broner is the son of Mrs. Ida
Broner and the late Abraham
Broner.
