41 Among Israel's most bitter enemies are Prince Amir Faisal
Al Saud, left, chief of the Saudi Arabian delegation to the
I railed Nations, and Faris Bey El-Khouri, the Syrian chief
delegate, seen chatting during an intermission of UN deliber-
talons on Palestine last week. Syrian forces, including the
Druse guards, shown at the right, have invaded Palestine and
lee engaged in bitter fighting with the Ilaganah. Syria has
an army of 10,000, but Saudi Arabia's army is negligible.
These American Rabbis and Rabbinical students enrolled at
the Hebrew University in Jerusalem flocked to Ilaganah's
colors immediately after the U. S. announced its recogni.
tion of Israel.

had been killed and wounded at Milikya, near Israel's northeastern border. Other Cairo reports said that Egypt's forces
were 27 miles south of Tel Aviv and had captured the coastal town of Al Majdal, but admitted that no well-fortified
Jewish settlements had been attacked. The map at the right shows Negev settlements and how the area is watered.

Three Jewish leaders, above,
were Israel's most articulate
spokesmen in the United Na-
tions sessions. To them goes
most of the credit for the
approval of the partition plan
and the defeat of trusteeship.
