The Jewish State Lives!
The shameful surrender by the Tru-
man administration to oil imperialists and
the hysteria against Russia has automatic-
ally brought the Jewish State in existence.
All that is needed now is the official
proclamation by the Jews of Palestine in
response to the decision of the General
Assembly of the United Nations, Nov. 29,
1947.
Today, the Yishuv's manpower and in-
dustry stand mobilized to defend their
State.
We in America must redouble our efforts
now^in behalf of the infant republic. Per-
haps the sacrifices of our Jewish citizens
will in small measure assuage the ignominy
of the American betrayal.
• • •
We hail the prompt action of the Zion-
ist Emergency Council in calling for a mo-
bilization of Jewish groups all over the
country to fight the Truman administra-
tion's reversal.
If public opinion can still be aroused
and the many senators and congressmen
who have given frequent lip service to the
Zionist program, such as our own Senator
Vandenberg, be prevailed to 'bestir them-
selves, the President may still be shown
that he has acted unwisely in abandoning
partition.
Ile can still be convinced that a trustee-
ship will not at all reduce the military re-
sponsibilities which the implementation of
partition might have demanded.
In the meantime, with the UN pledges
nullified, the Jewish State must take root,
and all of us must turn to it with our
sympathy, our love %and our 'material as-
sistance.
The Toy Incident
The Jewish Community Council, after
careful investigation, has absolved Police
Commissioner Toy of bias in his ill-con-
sidered radio remarks on the alleged in-
filtration of Communists into the United
States in the guise of Rabbis.
We believe that the Council acted in-
telligently and decisively and that as far
as the question of prejudice is concerned,
the incident should be considered closed.
14 oy is not an anti-Semite. He has been
a friend of Jews all the years he has been
in public office and has never displayed
signs of racial bias or bigotry.
If Toy is guilty of anything, it is tact-
lessness. Because one or two Communists
may have entered this country by fraudu-
lently claiming that they were Rabbis;
there was no cause to cite such a report
over the air since it would be certain to
be garbled or misinterpreted.

undisciplined and then continue to expect
the confidence and respect of Detroit Jewry.
Surely Congress knows the purpose of
the Community Council, and should realize
that its failure • to consult with it on an
incendiary issue leads to much mischief
and weakens the Council.
The fact that Toy recklessly suggested
that those who did not agree with him po-
litically ought to be shot or jailed is an
entirely independent matter and should be
handled separately from the unsubstan-
tiated charge of anti-Jewish bias.
• • •
The whole episode 'shows how woefully
ignorant Detroit Jews are that they have a
trained, professional body to handle prob-
lems like these. Certainly, it shows that
those who do know the program of the
Council ought 'to recognize its primacy in
certain community matters and not act on
their own without recourse to it.
If we are to have unity in this com-
munity, independent and untrustworthy
measures by individuals and organizations
will definitely not help to achieve it,
Ask Humane DP Bill
It is encouraging to note that Senators
Ferguson, Taft, McGrath and others are
dissatisfied with a half-hearted Wiley bill
calling for the admission of a maximum of
50,000 DP's a year for two years.
The number is pitifully inadequate,
being a far cry from the 900,000 figure
sought in the Stratton bill.
Moreover, the Wiley measure is mani-
festly discriminatory, particularly against
Jews. It provides . ' that half of the DP's
must be from countries that have been
annexed by a foreign power, presumably
Russia. This immediately bars the largest
bloc of DP's, those from Poland and Ro-
mania which have not been annexed.
The other half, according to the bill,
must be agriculturists. So if a DP is not
a Balt or a farmer, he. has no chance of
getting in. And if he is a Balt or a farmer,
no provision is made for his wife or chil-
dren any more than any is made for
professional .men, skilled workers or or-
phans.
It would be suprising, indeed, if after
such restrictions, even a Minyan of Jews
were admitted.
We urge opponents of the Wiley bill to
prevail upon their colleagues to substitute
a bill with humane motives so that the
United States can do its rightful share
in giving the DP's a home.
A Matter of Opinion

Letters to the Editor
YESHIVAH GRATEFUL
Dear Editor:
On behalf of the 5708 Torah
Month Commitee of Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah, I wish to extend
to you our sincere sense of ap-
preciation for .the excellent
manner in which you publicized
this year's observance for a
period of more than two months
preceding the March 14th event,
which climaxed our activity.
The large audience which par-
ticipated in the Beth Yehudah
Day School graduation, Feb. 29,
the capacity attendance at the
dinner last Sunday night, and
the unprecedented number of
people who expressed their high
regard for the Yeshivah and its
president, Rabbi M. J. Wohlge-
lernter, in our yearbook, have
been recruited mainly through
the "good press" we have had.
In the community generally,
there has also been aroused a
greater interest in the Yeshivah
program as a result of the at-
tention called to our work in
your coluMns.
We are particularly grateful
to you for the visit you made
to our classes, and your per-
sonal attendance at the dinner,
which has given you an oppor-
tunity for direct observation of
the job done at our school.
Your editorial of Feb. 27, was a
forceful expression of the in-
terest shown by you in our
program.
MORRIS W. ZACK,
General Chairman.

Sensational
articles,
huge
streamlined headlines, spicy bed-
room stories and shallow non-
sense which goes under the
false name of "human interest"
matter have replaced the for-
mer serious articles on Jewish
and world affairs at home and
abroad for which the paper was
known and respected.
Names of familiar writers
have disappeared from its pages,
and the paper has that confused
and pathetic look of a respect-
able, white-haired old lady sud-
denly gone on a wild spree.
Contributors and readers are
bewildered and wondering what
it's all about. The prevalent
opinion is that this is a well-
staked maneuver by the owners
to. pave the way for the elimi-
nation of an old journalistic
Jewish landmark through a
merger.
Whatever it is. the shades of
the late Saperstein, Sarasohn,
Wiernick and Fishman must
groan in their graves at the
sight.

THE AMERICAN Jewish Con-
ference has decided to drop
plans about transforming itself
into a permanent Assembly. It
will continue, however, to func-
tion as the Conference—a de-
cision which puts Bnai Brith on
the spot.
Bnai Brith rejected joining
the Assembly, but it is very
much committed to remaining
in the Conference. What now,
