Lockman in His Element
as U.S. Food Conserver

Soap Executive's Job Is Selling
His Products on a Large Scale

By IRVING KAIIEN
To conserve food, the United States is launched on a program
of "waste less". The program is not a case of "Waste not, want
not" for Americans, but is designed to "waste not" so Europeans
will "want not". The man appointed by President Truman to
persuade the people of the efficacy of the plan through publicity

sales manager of the company,
and in keeping with the great
American story, he became pres-
ident of the company.
Publicity and advertising were
the assignments Luckman re-
ceived. As president of the
Pepsodent Company, he made
the name "Iriunr a patented

coast.

In that position, Luckman be-
came friends with many celebri-
ties of stage, screen and radio.
Many of them were his employ-
ees—Bob Hope, for example,
made the name "Irium" famous
on his Pepsodent Show.
Bing Crosby, whom Luckman

is said to_resemble, gave Kraft
Food Products a national repu-
tation. And all America stops
to listen to Lux Radio Theater,
Amos and Andy, and dozens of
daytime serials that fall under
the mantle of Lever Brothers.
Luckman took these branches
of publicity and advertising un-
der his personal supervision.
As a propaganda man, Luck-
man knows all the techniques
and ways and means of promo-
tion. Friends of the appointee
indicate that this may be just
a step to a political career.
The American elections are
not too distant for potential
candidates to be throwing their
hats into the political arena,
they say, and Luckman is "just
trying his luck." Up to now, at
least, it's been fabulous.
