in American judiciary circles
is Justice Birdie Amsterdam
whose knowledge of Hebrew
learning motivated her early de-
sire to study law. Justice Am-
sterdam is the first and only
woman indorsed by all bar as-
sociations and nominated by a
major political party as munici-
pal court justice in New York
county.
In her student days Birdie
Amsterdam was torn ,between
bitions: her desire to fol-
t
the footsteps of her broth-
lo
o was a physician, and her
er
interest in law. So for a time
she worked at New York's
Mount Sinai Hospital by day
and studied law by night. At
16 she graduated from high
school and won a state scholar,.
ship,, but she was too young to
get into law school immediately.
From the age of 12 one of her
self-chosen ..tasks' •was to 'help
people in need of aid. A special-
ty was teaching English to re-
cent.dmmigrants who wanted to
become American citizens.
After graduating from New
York University Law School and
going into practice, Birdie Am-
sterdam did not forget the needy.

ing given in her honor in De•
cember.
In the fall she will give a
series of lectures to the students
at New York University on the
cultural contributions of the
Jews. The chair of Hebrew Cul-
ture and Education at New York
University (only one of its kind
in the country) was established
through the Jewish Culture
Foundation.
Judge Amsterdam believes
that the study of Jewish culture
makes Jews aware of their cul-
tural heritage and its import-
ancp to America and makes for .
mutual understanding between
Jews and non-Jew.

For this more than anything
