British Regime Joins Leadership
of Arabs, Jens in Fighting Strife
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Despite several more clashes be-
tween Jews and Arabs, there is hope here that the inter-
communal situation will return to normal soon, now that
the government has joined Jewish and Arab leaders and
organizations in an effort to suppress further violence.
Eliezer Perlson, vice-mayor of
Tel Aviv, revealed that he has
approached the Jaffa municipality
with a proposal for common
action to halt the battles.
The government's call for a
cessation of hostilities in the
Jaffa-Tel Aviv area came in a
statement by the High Commis-
sioner who pointed out that at
this time, when Palestine's case
is before the United Nations,
internecine warfare "can be in
the interest of nobody." He
threatened severe punishment
for either Jew or Arab caught
engaging in violence.
SUPREME TEST
Earlier, the Jewish Agency is-
sued a statement to the press
pointing out that the government
is faced with a "supreme test"
to maintain law and order in
Palestine. It declared that state-
ments by leading Jewish and
Arab organizations prove con-
clusively that neither peoples
want war, and that the govern-
ment must act quickly and de-
cisively to prevent "irresponsible
dements from plunging the
country into a blood bath."
At about the same time, a gov-
ernment communique declared
that the clashes were unrelated
incidents confined to limited
areas.
A statement by the Chief Rab-
binate was read on the Palestine
radio. It appealed to the popu-
lation to maintain discipline and
not to shed "innocent blood." The
Jaffa municipality issued a man-
ifeski calling on all Arabs to
avoid clashes with the Jews.
A Jewish girl was wounded
when a bus was fired on by
Arabs near Abu Kebir, Jaffa
suburb and center of many Arab
attacks. Hours later, an Arab
was found stabbed to death on
the Jaffa-Tel Aviv boundary
line, presumably in reprisal for
the earlier attack. A Jew, Abra-
ham Cohen, was stoned and
stabbed to death near Jaffa.
woman and her four children
when the Haganah blew up a
house in Jaffa last week, during
an operation to punish Arabs
who had participated in a raid
which cost four Jews their lives.
The Labor daily Davar de-
manded an investigation and a
full explanation from the Jew-
ish resistance organization. The
Haganah, meanwhile, issued a
statement regretting that any in-
nocent persons died In the ex-
plosion and said that its members
were unaware of the presence
of the children in the building
which had been thoroughly
searched.
Meanwhile, British t r o o p s
rounded up another 18 Revision-
ist leaders in Nathanya, scene
of the hanging of two British
sergeants by the Irgun. In Tel
Aviv, it was officially announced,
one other Jew was arrested in
the hunt for "suspected terror-
ist."
CURBS THREATENED
High Commissioner Cunning-
ham threatened the imposition
of more drastic curbs if extrem-
ist actions recur, at a meet's g
with Goldie Meirson, Jewish
Agency political leader, it is
learned.
Members of the Agency arc
considering holding the forth-
coming Zionist Actions Commit-
tee meeting in Jerusalem rather
than Zurich, because of the local
situation. The dvision is up to
Agency leaders abroad, but Mrs.
Meirson will not be able to
leave Palestine under any cir-
cumstances and David Ben Guri-
on may also be left behind.
