Calls Them a 'Privileged Element',
Repeats All the Familiar Charges
WARSAW (WNS)—The familiar charge that "Jews are
occupying high positions in government offices" and I that
"anti-Semitism is a reaction to Jewish behavior" was heard
here on the floor of the new Polish parliament, when Deputy
Siegrnunt Zulawski, the only "independent Socialist" in
Parliament, accused the Jews in Poland of being a "privi-
element." '
The anti-Semitic tirade, the
first of its kind heard in the new
parliament, was met by one of
the Jewish deputies, Prof. Joseph
Sack.
He denied that the Jews in
Poland were receiving special
treatment and consideration in
the government budget, declar-
ing that 95 per cent of the Jew-
ish Central Committee's budget
was covered by Jewish contribu-
tions from abroad and that only
five per cent came from the gov-
ernment.
Sack, who is vice-chairman of
the committee, emphasized Polish
Jewry's support of the present
government.
He lauded the government's
policy of granting the Jews "fUll
and actual equality," of encour-
aging' Jewish national life with-
the country, and of taking "a
positive attitude toward the emi-
gration tendencies prevailing
among a large part of the Jewish
population."

Cardinal Minimizes
Losses in Hungary
BUDAPEST (WNS) — Josef
Caldinal Mindszenty, Catholic
Primate of Hungary, was report-
ed to have declared in an inter-
.% iew that "only" 500,000 and not
890,000 Jews had been killed in
Hungary during. the Fascist re-
gime and that the toll may even
be reduced by the return of sev-
eral thousand deportees.
The interview, which appear-
ed in the Vienna newspaper Die
Welt Am Abend has caused deep
consternation and anxiety in Jew-
ish circles. One of the Jewish
weeklies, Uj Elet, called the car-
dinal's statement anti-Semtic.
At one of the prominent Buda-
pest synagogues, the Rabbi told
the congregants that "in a coun-
try where a prelate may speak
thus with immunity, I can only
say tq the Jewish youth: Get
out of here."

MUNICH (JTA) — A three-
day Rabbinical conference closed
with a large bloc of delegates
leaving the meeting in protest
against the makeup cf the seven-
man presidium elected.
From the beginning there were
sharp differences of opinion over
the question of what constituted
a legitimate Rabbi. It was finally
agreed to name a seven-man
praesidium under the chairman-
ship of Rabbi Samuel Snieg,
president of the Rabbinical As-
sociation, which will rule on the
bona fides of all persons claim-
ing to be Rabbis.
The six other members of the
praesidium will head various de-
partments, such as education and
culture, marital and divorce prob-
lems, Kashruth, Sabbath observ-
ance and purity of the home.
The split developed when 'sev-
eral elderly Hungarian Rabbis
were elected to the praesidium.
The dissident group demanded
some representation for younger
elements and also for political
parties, such as the Agudas Israel,
and the Mizrachi.
trate's court here ordered the
detention of five Jewish youths,
alleged members of the Stern
Group, on charges of possessing
illegal arms.
The cache consisted of five
heavy machine guns, many small
arms, over 50 hand grenades and
other weapons of destruction.
The detained jouth will be de-
fended by DeMoro Giafferi, the
defender of Herschel C‘vnspan,
the Polish Jewish youth whose

lomat Ernst Vom Rath precipi-
tated aNazi-instigated wave of

Sir Abdur Rahman, Indian deb-
egate, telling Rabbi Herzog that
he has "great respect for the spir-
itual and religious feelings of
every community and holds them
in reverence," said he felt such
matters should remain outside of
politics. He then asked the Chief
Rabbi: "Can anyone believing in
Christ as a member of the Holy
Trinity be considered a Jews?"
Rabbi Herzog replied: "Adop-
tion of another faith does not
make a Jew not a Jew. For
example, the marriage of a Jew
with a non-Jew is invalid reli-

Chief Rabbi Herzog attacked
those "who say that all the Jews
need is a so-called spiritual cen-
ter, a great religious academy, a
university, a central Rabbinical
synod — but nti land, no settle-
ments, no towns, no industry, no
commonwealth.
"I stand here," he declared, "to
give the lie to these hypocritical
assertions of the enemies of our
people who affect a pseudo-spiri-
tual concern for Its spiritual
future."
The Chief Rabbi said that a
Jewish Commonwealth would
never attempt to impose the Jew-
ish religion on people of other
faiths residing there. Holy places
of the Moslem and Christian re-
ligions in Palestine would be un-
der their own administration, he
added.
He urged the committee to in-
vestigate the displaced personS
camps of Europe, declaring that
"the world will not find peace
until it relieves its conscience of
this great burden — the home-
lessness of one of its most ancient
people.'

conversion, the Indian turned to
him sharply and rapped out ex-
citedly: "Then all Christians and
Moslems are still Jews?"
"Political questions must be de- t'
cided by political negotiations,
and I believe justice is with us,"
he added. If a just decision is
made, heisdeclared, "we will ac-
cept it."
