JERUSALEM—In an act of retaliation for the murders
of Dov Gruner and his three associates in the Jewish re-
sistance, extremists blew up an express train outside Re-
hovoth killing five British soldiers and injuring 23 others.
Three civilians also lost their lives.
Troops from an army camp nearby hastened to the
scene. A military cordon was thrown around the area to
prevent the extremists' escape, but a search of the orange

Col. Morris J. Mendelsohn,
chairman of the United Zionists-
Revisionists of America's execu-
tive board, charged that by re-
fusing to intervene on behalf of
Dov Gruner and the other con-
demned youths, the United States
State Department gave its "tacit
approval" to the hangings.
At the national headquarters of
the Zionist Organization of Amer-
ica an impromptu protest meeting
was held. Dr. Sidney Marks, ex-
ecutive director, declared that it
was "clear that the executions
were intended to provoke out-
breaks, with the aim of prejudic-
ing the case of Jewish Palestine
in the eyes of the membership of
the United Nations."
But these executions, he main-
tained, "will have the reverse ef-
fect upon public opinion of the
world from that which was in-
tended. They will arouse the re-
vulsion of the civilized nations
and unmask the ugly fact of Brit-
ish military rule in Palestine."
Peter H. Bergson, chairman of
the Hebrew Committee of Na-
tional Liberation, describing the
hangings as "an act of premedi-
tated murder," warned that Brit-
ain would be responsible not only
for "the four young lives just
taken but also for the lives of
many Hebrews and Englishmen
that will he lost."

five years' service in the English
army, now buried on a lonely

"The martyrs died for a great
cause. The Jews of Palestine will
be stirred to increase efforts to
thwart the evil decrees of British
statesmen. The Jews of America

The offer of the Jewish Chron-
icle to supply full publicity serv-
ice to the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion without any charge is being
studied by a committee of the
Federation board of governors.
Julian Krolik, Federation presl•
dent, has announced.
The Chronicle appeared before
the board to request the abandon-
ment of the subsidy to the Jewish
News for the same service.

LETTER TO BOARD
In presenting its offer, the
Jewish Chronicle summarized its
case in the following letter to
the board:
The Jewish Chronicle respect
fully submits the following argu-
ments in its petition to the Jewish
Welfare Federation for an end
to subventions to the Jewish
News. The Chronicle bases this
petition on principles of justice
and communal harmony.
The present ownership of the
Chronicle deplores the fact that
it has been discriminated against
by leaders of the JWF because
of the alleged sins and omis-
sions of its predecessors.
While loyalty to a friend for
past services is an admirable at-
tribute, the Chronicle submits that
such loyalty to the Jewish New..
ought not to take the form of
unjustifiable favoritism that dis-
criminates against its fair com-
petitor.
CHRONICLE'S AIMS
The Chronicle, in the year and
a half of its present ownership,
has made every effort to supply
the Jewish community with an
interesting, newsy and dynamic
newspaper. That the public is
pleased with the recent changes
in format and editorial policy, as
well as in the spirit and Vigor of

the paper, is attested to by the
fact that our circulation has
doubled in the past year and a
half and is increasing steadily.
The Jewish Chronicle maintains
that all papers have a quasi-com-
munity responsibility that re-
quires them to carry the news of
all communal groups and, parti-
cularly, the Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration here; that the paper
should carry that news as a mat-
ter of public policy and without
the expectation of any subsidy
cr other monetary award.
The Chronicle believes that by
subsidizing the Jewish News, a
private enterprise, the JWF is
using trust funds, contributed ex-
clusively for charity, for a pur-
pose never intended by the con-
tributors.
CIRCULATION CLAIM
The Chronicle declares that if
the Jewish Welfare Federation of-
ficers justify the subsidy as com-
pensation for publicity which
would cost the JWF more to pre-
sent in another form, they un-
consciously lend themselves to a
subtle fraud perpetrated by the
Jewish News on the public when
it deliberately leaves the impres-
sion that it has a paid circulation
that approaches 20,000 because of
its so-called Federation issue.
Believing, then, that both the
Chronicle and the News should
give its services to the community
without charge and that a grant
of subsidy is repugnant to the
spirit of charity, the Jewish
Chronicle is ready and hereby of-
fers to the Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration to give free and without
any obligation whatsoever all the
services hitherto given to the
Federation by the Jewish News.
