Zionist Council,
Rabbis Horrified
Indignation and disgust at
Britain stirred the Detroit
Jewish community this week
after her callous murder of
Dov Gruner and three other
Palestine patriots.
All who commented de-
clared that this final act of

British depravity wiped out any
illusion about possible British
fairness in future dealings with
the Jews of Palestine or its avow-
als at the United Nations.
The statement of Aaron Weis-
brot, Revisionist leader here, was
typical. "I am horrified at Brit-
ain's complete disregard of con-
siderations of justice and ordinary
decency. I have riot one iota of
faith left in any pledge she has
ever given or will in the future
make.
I1E SITS 'SIIIVAII'
"I am closing my store and will
sit Shivah for my four murdered
brothers."
Shocked community leaders is-
sued statements excoriating Brit-
ain. "This is an abominable cli-
max to the whole outrage," de-
clared Rabbi Morris Adler.
"As a nation on trial, Britain
must not be allowed to tilt as
a judge at the UN. We must
move from the defensive and
put Britain on the defensive.
We have held back In America
but we must now pillory Eng-
land."
SPERKA STATEMENT
Rabbi Joshua Sperka declared
that "Britain is playing into the
hands of those who are trying to
demonstrate that she will not ex-
ecute the mandate. Even her
friends are losing faith in her.
"I was personally shocked by
the death of Gruner. I am prison
chaplain in a state where there Is
no capital punishment for any-
one. These men were not self-
seekers but were fighting to save
our people. We must, continue to
flood Palestine with immigrants
as our answer and every Jew
must sign as a Zionist."
LIKE IIITLERITES
Rabbi Leon Fram said, "The
gap between Britishism and Na-
zism is narrowing daily. Who but
Nazis would execute a man while
his appeal was still pending and
without giving him the privilege
accorded to all condemned men
in the civilized world, the privi-
lege of last religious rites?
"Every Jew and every lover
man, national director of the Miz- of democracy, Jew and non-Jew,
should appeal to the conscience

and the Detroit Leland Hotel.
BRITISH COWARDLY
Isadore Starr, Bnai Brith leader,
said, "It was cowardice for Brit-
ain to go through with it. She
didn't have the courage to admit
her sentence was too drastic.
Day Gruner's death should inspire
Jewish people to work harder for
the principles he willingly died
for. We must not allow his death
to be in vain."
The Zionist Council, represent-
ing all Zionist groups in the city
issued the following statement
signed by Benjamin Laikin, presi-
dent:
