first public health literature in
Yiddish for distribution among
Jewish DP's.
The finest treatment for tuber-
culosis is rest and proper food.
To this end, the JDC has granted
funds leading to the opening and
maintenance of six tubeculosis
sanatoria in Switzerland.
One of the proudest achieve-
ments of the JDC in Italy is the
Merano Sanatorium, which re-
ceived its first patients last No-
vember.

NEW YORK—A decade of tor;
ture, of systematic starvation and
horror has left the health of
thousands of Europe's Jewish
survivors broken and shattered.
Rebuilding their strength remains
one of the most gripping prob-
lems of Jewish life on the con-
tinent.
Many of the Jews who live
and work and struggle to rebuild
their lives today were found by
their liberators among the heaps
of the dead in Nazi concentra-
tion camps.
•Others spent the days of Hit-
ler's occupation hiding in dismal
forests, dark caves, cemeteries.
Many more felt the lash of the
Nazi whip in slave labor gangs,
working endless nights and days,
in rain and snow, under a broil-
ing sun.
SPEND 58 MILLIONS
These are the men and women
and children for whom the Joint
Distribution Committee is now
giving care in more than 155
hospitals, dispensaries, sanatoria,
and clinics in nearly every coun-
try in Europe. These are the
people who are the concern of
JDC's medical and public health
staff.
JDC medical activities last
year received appropriations am-
ounting to approximately 20 per
cent of the committee's expendi-
tures, which totalled over $58,-
500,000.
In the JDC public health pro-
gram, JDC's medical officers con-
sult with local Jewish commit-
tees on health problems and give
guidance as well as financial sup-
port in planning, developing and
carrying out programs to meet
the medical needs of Europe's
Jews. In every country in Eur-
ope JDC works in close cooper-
ation with existing health agen-
cies such as OSE in the estab-

The fight for health which is
one of the primary tasks of the
JDC in behalf. of Europe's Jews
begins with the extensive sys-
tem of medical supplies ship-
ments which the JDC inaugur-
ated even before V-E Day. Un-
der this program, huge supplies
of medicines, surgical equipment
and other facilities are shipped
regularly from the United States
to Europe for distribution by
qualified JDC field workers.
From the United States office
of the foreign liquidation commis-
sion, the JDC has purchased in
Europe further quantities of
medical supplies, ranging from
bandages and surgical equipment
to complete mobile health units
Other medical supplies such as
syringes, needles and similar
items in great demand have been
ourchased in Sweden. Local pur-
chases of X-Ray film and similar
items supplement JDC's ship-
ments.
