ORDER KESHER SHEL BARZEL (Iron Knot) was founded
T HE in New
York in 1860 and went out of existence in 1017. The order

was popular in Detroit for we find five lodges existing here between
1867 and 1904.
Michigan Lodge No. 1 was organized Nov. 8, 1867, the charter
members being Aaron Ackerland, Alexander Tannenholz, Harris Cohn,
Isaac Levy, Louis Sachs, Herman
Kretsh and Nathan Freundlich.
The object of the lodge is stated

safeguards to guarantee the safe-

placed Jews in Austria were de-
manded by the American Jewish
Committee in a statement by Dr.
John Slawson, executive vice-presi-
dent, on the proposed withdrawal
of Allied troops from Austria, pur-
suant to the treaty under negoti-
ation in Moscow.
Before Allied troops leave a
country, Dr. Slawson said, "the
Jewish displaced persons now in
Austria, with the exception of a
small number who may apply for
citizenship, should be removed to
places of safety."
The DP's, he pointed out, will
not be safe in Austria because
"Austrian anti-Semitism is wide-
spread." Stressing the point that
he Austrian government's atti-
:ude is "equivocal," Dr. Slawson
:harged "its program on restitu-
ion of property to victims of
Vazi persecution causes grave
loubts as to the future."

The other four lodges were:

THE ELECTIONS ... well, the
battles are over and the choice
is made. The 9-A Class at Durfee
is headed by Bob Gans. For vice,
it was very close between Fred
Horowitz and Jack Novominsky;
Fred was the winner. The battle
between Idelle Graff, Addle Rot-
man and Betty Farber' for sec-
retary was the closest fight, but
at the end, Addle came out vic-
torious. Jerry Weisman defeated
Marilyn Gilbert for treasurer.
