International NEW YORK.* safeguards to guarantee the safe- ty of . approximately 37,000 dis- placed Jews in Austria were de- manded by the American Jewish Committee in a statement by Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-presi- dent, on the proposed withdrawal of Allied troops from Austria, pur- suant to the treaty under negoti- ation in Moscow. Before Allied troops leave a country, Dr. Slawson said, "the Jewish displaced persons now in Austria, with the exception of a small number who may apply for citizenship, should be removed to places of safety." The DP's, he pointed out, will not be safe in Austria because "Austrian anti-Semitism is wide- spread." Stressing the point that he Austrian government's atti- :ude is "equivocal," Dr. Slawson :harged "its program on restitu- ion of property to victims of Vazi persecution causes grave loubts as to the future."
