Werner Candidacy
for Judge Backed

HELEN MEKLIR
The engagement of Helen Mek-
lir to Teddy Friedman, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Leo Friedman of Wind-
sor, has been announced by the
bride-elect's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Mektir of Tyler avenue.

Jewish friends of Eduard Wer-
ner, candidate for Common Pleas
judge, are backing his candidacy
as a lawyer with a judicial tem-
perament, congenial, open-minded
and fair. The primary election is
set for Monday.
Werner, with has established an
enviable reputation as a musician
and conductor, is a former as-
sistant prosecuting attorney.
He has been personally respon-
sible for encouraging many fine
musicians, among them WWJ mu-
sical director Phil Brestoff.

Yiddish Groups
Plan Honors for
Abraham Reisen

The joint Yiddish culture com-
mittee of the Jewish Community
Center and the Jewish Community
Council will hold a city-wide con-
ference at 11 a. m. Sunday of all
landsmanschaften and Yiddish
culture groups to discus plans for
the Abraham Reisen 70th anni-
versary celebration. Reisen, the
poet, will visit Detroit March 23.
Saul Meisels, concert and radio
artist and interpretor of Jewish
and Hebrew songs, will be fea-
tured at the Jewish music festival
program Sunday evening, Feb. 23,
at the Jewish Community Center.
Julius Chajes, Center director
of music, will appear on the same
program with two members of the
D e t r oit Symphony Orchestra,
Zinovi Bistritzky, violinist, and
Jacob Becker, cellist.
An Arbor Day dance will be
bold from 9:30 a. m. to 12:30 p.m.
Sunday in the Jewish Commu-
nity Center. Paul LaVoie and or-
chestra will play.
Marcia Wisotzky has been
elected president of the Interme-
diate Council of the Center. Other
officers are vice-president, Ed
Cohen, secretary, Marilyn Waratt;
treasurer, Herman Eizelman; and
program chairman, Sara Kogan.
"Captains Courageous," the last
in a series of five film programs
presented by the Center Cinema
League, will be shown at 8 p.m.
Thursday. Spencer Tracy is star-
red.

George Weiswasser, editor of
the Detroit Jewish Chronicle, will
speak at the installation of officers
of the United Zionists-Revisionist
of Detroit. His subject will be
The Anglo-Jewish Press in the
U. S.," with emphasis on the treat-
ment of news concerning Pales-
tine.
The meeting will be held at
Finkel's Restaurant, Linwood at
Taylor avenues, at 8:30 p. m. Mon-
day. Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka will
install the following officers: Dr.
Noah E. Aronstam, honorary pres-
ident; M. Manuel Merzon, presi-
dent; Jacob Mohr, vice-president;
Joseph Grossman, secretary; and
Sol B. Edelman, treasurer.
Refreshments will be served.
Reservations may be made by

Announcement is also made of
the banquet on March 19 at the
Wilshire, to raise funds for the
Astral Zion, the prisoners held by
the British administration in Pal-
estine. Dr. Lubinski, recently ar-
rived from the Holy Land, will
be principal speaker.

stein, communal and religious

been elected national chairman of
the United Palestine Appeal,
American Jewry's central agency
for financing the upbullding of
Palestine.
