Playlet for Chanukah

It's called 'Comrades All'; the Author
Is Dorothy Kabakoff ; 12 Are in Cast
(From the Synagogue and
School published by the United
Synagogue of America.)
No decorations are needed.
Twelve children, boys and girls,
are on the stage, each one wears
a placard with the name of a Jew-
ish month printed on it, in He-
brew and English. The children
are playing games on the floor,
running around, skipping rope,
etc. Suddenly two children begin
to argue.
ADAR (pushing Kislev) : I'm
first! I go first because I'm the
jolliest month and the most fa-
mous.
KISLEV: You know you're not!
During my month, everyone eats
latkes, and what's better than
that?
SIVAN (approaches to see what
the fuss is about): You're both no
good! (to Kislev) You say you
bring people latkes. Do you know
what I give people to eat? Cheese-
blintzes! And if you've never
tasted cheese-blintzes, you have
never tasted anything!
NISAN (approaches the group):
All you think of is your stomach!
During my month, the Jewish
people became free!
(All the months gather around.
Each wants to know what Is hap-
pening.)
SH'VAT: What's happening?
IYAR: It seems that they're ar-
guing about which is the best
month.
SH'VAT: Why should they ar-
gue? I have as much right to say
I'm the best month as they have .
MONTHS (all simultaneously.
In general commotion): I'm the
best month! Sh'vat is the best!
Everybody likes the summer!
That's me. Tammuz!
(Enter Rosh Hashonah, dressed
as an elderly man.)
ROSH HA SHONAH: Quiet!
Quiet! What is the reason for this
rumpus? I'm ashamed to know
that my months are acting like
tiny children who are arguing
over a plaything. What Is the
trouble?
AV: All your months are argu-
ing. Each claims to be the best
month in the Jewish calendar.
(Pauses and turns to other
months.) Months, I've an idea!
We all think we are best; but if
we argue, we will never get any-
where. Rosh Hashonah is a very
good and kind judge. Let's ask
him to decide!
ALL: Good! That's a fine idea!
TISHRI: Yes, please, Rosh Ha-
shonah, would you be judge?
ROSH HASHONAH: It would
make me very happy if I could
settle your dispute and make
peace reign among you once
more; but I would have to hear
each month's testimony. Come, if
you sit down quietly, I will be
judge.
(All sit down on the floor In a
row, Rosh Hashanah sits on a
chair.)
ROSH HASHONAH: Nisan, you
may give your testimony first, be•
cause you are the first month ac-
cording to the Bible.
NISAN: As I was saying, once
before, it was during Nisan that
Moses was successful in bringing
the children of Israel out of the
house of bondage in Egypt. Why
that's so important, that we cele-
brate it even to this day, and we
have a Seder and eat Matzos.
Isn't that important? I think I
should be judged the best month.
ROSH HASHONA H: Kislev,
you're next.
KISLEV: A great leader, Ju-
dah Maccabee, freed the Jews
during my month. They were
living under the tyrant rule of
the Syrians. He organized a
brave band of fighters and was
victorious over the Syrians, then
ho cleansed the Temple In Jeru-
salem. All that happened dur-
ing Kislev; and do you know
when we light the Chanukah
menorah, or when we play drei-
dcl? Why it's during my month,
of course, because Kislev Is the
best!
ROSH HASHONAH: Sivan, your
testimony now, please.
SIVAN: Rosh Hashonah, I shall
try to prove that I am the most
important and the best month. We
all know what it is that was giv-
en to Israel to be its law, and
what Israel gave to the world. It
is the Torah. When Moses gave
the Jewish people the Ten Com-
mandments on Shavu-os, it Was
i n my month. The Ten Com-
mandments organized and united
them as a nation. Don't you agree
with me now?
ROSH HASHONAH: And now,
Sh'vat.
SH'VAT: Some people think I
don't count. That is because they
really don't know me. The trees
have their birthdays during Sh'vat,
and trees certainly are important.
Why they helped drain the swamps
I n Eretz Ysrael and to make it
safe for the Chalutzim to come
and build the land without dan-
ger of malaria. That is my claim
t o greatness!
ROSH HASHONAH: We will
now hear from you, Chesvan.
CHESVAN: I'm very important,
and this happened quite recently.
Lord 'Balfour chose me as the
month in which to make the Jew-
411 people a most wonderful
promise—that Palestine would be
established as a National Home-
l and for us all; and you'll see,
t hat promise is going to be kept
t oo, some day and soon!
ROSH HASHONAH: We are
ready for you, Iyar.
Europe's Jewish survivors are today building new ijves and train-
ing for new careers in more than 350 reconstruction projects
sponsored by the Joint Distribution Committee which is financed
by the United Jewish Appeal. Eager to renew old skills or learn
new ones, they flock by the thousands to JDC-sponsored schools.

many, many years, although eve-
rything that happened In my
month wasn't happy. There was a
great plague once among the stu-
dents of Rabbi Akiba, and many
died. Then the Roman govern-
ment decreed that we must stop
studying the Torah. But we
wouldn't give up the very thing
that kept us alive, so the hero Ear
Kochba led an army against Rome
and won.
ROSH HASHONAH: What have
you to say for yourself, Adar?
ADAR: Why, I'm wonderful, so
wonderful that some years I'm
wanted twice! I'm Adam Rishon
and I'm Adar Sheni. The best and
gayest fun of all comes during
my month. Esther and her uncle
Mordecai outwitted the villain
Haman, and showed him what
happens to anyone who tries to
exterminate all the Jewish people!
It can't be done! And to prove it,
we're still celebrating the Feast
of Purim!
ROSH HASHONAH: Come now,
Av, although your words will not
be happy ones.
AV: How true, how true! I
might claim title to the most fa-
mous month because of the sad-
ness in me. You see, dear friends,
the Temple in Jerusalem was de-
stroyed twice during my month.
On the ninth day of my month,
the Jews were sent a-wandering.
Since then, the Jewish people
have been a homeless nation, and
we fast on Tisha B'av to comme-
morate this event.
(NOTE: Other months may be
added if desired.)
ROSH HASHONAH: Enough,
enough. We have heard the testi-
mony of all of you who put forth
a claim. I have listened most at-
tentively to most of you and have

"Shoves Achim Gam Yochad."

gether in center of stage, put
hands on one another's shoulders
and sing.)
ROSH HASHONAH (steps for-
ward and turns to audience):
YOU can be friends too, like the
months of our Jewish calendar.
Sing the song with us. We will
lead you and show you the way.
