Jews Make Strides
in Chechoslovakia
"Maoz-Tzur," (Rock of Ages)
the familiar hymn that is sung
after the kindling of the Chanu-
kah lights, is not a Jewish melody
but an adaptation of an old Ger-
man folk song of the Middle
Ages. This German tune has also
been utilized by Christians, Mar-
tin Luther having employed it for
his chorals. One of the poems in
Lord Byron's "Hebrew Melodies"--
"On Jordan's Banks"—was set to
the music of "Maoz Tzur" by the
great poet's Jewish friend, Isaac
Nathan.

ia and Moravia. But there, the
in
strong anti-minorities move of the
central government, while not di-
r ated against Jews, hits them
nevertheless. It is directed main-
ly against Germans and Hungar-
ia ns. And even non-Czechoslo-
vak nationals who have not been
deported suffer disabilities.

l930 NATIONALITY BASIS
Under the new Czech laws, the
nationality for which a citizen
opted in the 1930 census is oper-
ative. A number of Jews, for
v ery good reasons 16 years ago,
opted for Hungarian or German
nationality. These are now having
some difficulty in retrieving their
property.
But a Jew who opted for Czech
or Jewish nationality in 1930, or
who has served with the forces,
can usually recover his property
in the Czech lands without great
difficulty.
In Bohemia and Moravia, the
Council of Jewish Communities
have received an advance from
Jewish funds by the government
to enable them to run their admin-
istration. It is only a minute
fraction of total Jewish property.
But it is indicative of the mood
of the government.
Greece boasts more advanced
restitution laws than Czechoslo-
vakia. But it has yet to make
such a practical gesture.

The frequency of Incidents of good will in action during the past year emphasized the basic sound-
ness of America's social health despite the sporadic rashes of racial and religious antipathies that
have broken out since the end of war. Most striking of these were those Involving young people.

development now widespread. Photo in the right shows the new building of the Williamsburg Settle-
