Vets Take Places
in Jewish Centers
NEW YORK— Jewish veterans
returning to civilian life are rapid-
ly taking their place in Jewish
community center life, findings of
a survey conducted by the Na-
tional Jewish Welfare Board
(JWB) reveal. More than 30,000
former GI's have already signed
up as members of Jewish com-
munity centers and YM-YWHA's
affiliated with the JWB, and more
than 90 per cent of the centers
reporting have a free membership
policy for the veterans.
Thirty-one centers have indi-
cated that there are no Jewish
veterans in their communities who
have not joined the center; 41
centers reported there are at least
12,500 former servicemen who have
not joined until now, under the
free membership plan.
More than 92 per cent of the
reporting centers have free mem-
bership for all Jewish veterans,
and only six use the plan for
center members only, more than
94 per cent of the centers give
them all membership privileges.
More than 54 per cent have free
membership for veterans for six
months, 37 per cent for one year,
and some centers have free vet-
eran membership for as long as
two years.
The majority of Jewish com-
munity centers adopted a free
membership policy after 1944, al-
though 10 centers had free mem-
bership for ex-GI's since 1941, and
28 more centers adopted the plan
before the end of 1944.
