Treaty Protection
of Jews is Sought
PARIS (WNS) — Inclusion of
specific clauses guaranteeing Jew-
ish rights and reparations in the
peace treaty with Germany was
demanded here in a resolution
adopted by the European Consult-
ative Council of the World Jewish
Congress, which closed a five-day
conference this week.
The council asked that the fol-
lowing clauses be included in the
German peace treaty:
1. Germany is to pay repars-
tions for the reconstruction of
Jewish communal life in other
countries, particularly in Pales-
tine.
2. Discriminatory legislation shall
be abolished and racial hatred
shall be considered a criminal of-
fense.
3. Germany shall guarantee fun-
damental human rights and free-
doms.
4. It shall make full restitution
of Jewish property seized or de-
stroyed by the Nazis and shall
surrender heirless Jewish property
for Jewish reconstruction.
5. Displaced Jews shall never
fall under the jurisdiction of Ger-
many.
6. Property of Cerman Jews out-
side Germany shall be exempted
from seizure to pay German
reparations.
Dr. Rafalel Cantoni, president of
the Federation of Jewish Commu-
Aides in Italy and Italian dele-
gate to. the council, called on
world Jewry to maintain complete
neutrality in the conflict between
the Anglo-American and Soviet
blocs.
Samuel Margoshes, American
delegate, said he hoped it would be
possible for the Congress to col-
laborate with the Jewish com-
munities. Dr. Noah Barou, Brit-
ish delegate, called on Russia to
appreciate the position of the
Jews.
Independent Arab
State in Palestine
Urged by Ibn Saud
MECCA, Saudi Arabia — King
Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia declared
again this week that the only just
solution of the Palestine problem
is to make the Holy Land an in-
dependent Arab state. President
Truman and the king have been
discussing the subject for the past
several weeks.
The king has no intention of
voiding the United States oil con-
cessions in his vast desert land,
he said, despite, Mr. Truman's ap-
parent cordiality to Zionist views
on the establishment of a Jewish
State.
To see the correspondent, King
Ibn Saud drove in a sleek Mer-
cedes from his palace inside Mec-
ca, where non-Moslems are not
permitted, to Hadda, just outside
the city.
When the patriarchal ruler ar-
rived, he was accompanied by a
large retinue of nobles, members
of his court and of his colorfully
costumed bodyguard.

MAN
or THE WEEK
'FOOTBALL SEASON can never arrive soon enough for our Man
of the Week, Abe Ellowitz (pronounced E-11e-o-witz), who this
year coached Cooley High School to the Detroit prep championship.
With only the yearly bowl games left to be played and with bas-
ketball, hockey and bowling installed as the nation's top sporting
attractions, Eliowitz can relax from his grid duties and plot football
strategy for next year.
Eliowitz is comparatively new as a football coach. He was ap-
pointed to direct Denby High School in 1943, and after three years
there, took over the top spot at
Cooley in 1946.
While at Denby, he, saw his
teams win 18 games and lose only
three. His 1945 eleven beat West-
ern High for the metropolitan title
and then went on to tie Catholic
Central, 19 to 19, In the annual
Goodfellow game.
His exploits at Cooley have been
sung over and over again in head-
lines in Detroit's press. A spark-
ling 1946 season culminated in a
21 to 13 victory over St. Anthony
in the Goodfellow classic two
weeks ago.
Many of Ellowitz's boys at Coo-
ley will take a fling at college
football. If they are only two-
thirds as good as their coach was
at 'Michigan State they should
make just about any college team
in the country.
