of "Shlamie," which his gentile
friends found hard to pronounce .
He liked all sports and displayed
a happy-go-lucky personality.
He died in an airplane crash on
Dec. 19, 1943, near Pocatello, Ida.,
a little over a year after he join-
ed the service.
He was 22 years of age.

the Ardennes found American di-
visions torn to shreds by this last-
ditch drive. The bitter winds of
winter made the Battle of the
Bulge even more merciless. Ber-
nard met his death in this cam-
paign, after he had served 46
months with Gen. Eisenhower's
Army.
He was 26 years of age.
