Report From German

but only in the rear end. Of
course, there were others around
by that time that saw PohlmanA
do this. Farmer Richards got a
reward of 100 marks for bringing
in the papers of the flier and be-
ing the first on the scene. That
was a standing reward. We felt
that Richards too was holding
back information but here again
we could do nothing. We left the
farmer a very scared man.

We then went to Halle and con-
tacted the local police. We un-
earthed a very interesting story.
The three fliers had come to Hal-
le and one of them was rather
badly hurt. He was taken to a
hospital. There had been a Ges-
tapo investigation of the affair. It
seems that, in view of the general
order that had come down, that
all fliers were to be beaten or
shot, the Nazis wanted to know
why the other two were not beat-
en or killed. The order for the
beating to death of all Allied air-
men has since been unearthed at
the Nuremberg Trials. The Ges-
tapo report, with others, had been
ordered burned when the Ameri-
cans approached Halle. However,
Policeman Pohlmann (same name
but no relative of Ortsgruppenleiter
Pohlmann) and the Burgomeister
of Halle, went to the cemetery
with the records, buried them and
put flowers over the grave. When
the Americans came, they dug up
the records and turned them over
to their officials. The report was
supposed to be in Bielefield, the
headquarters of the British In-
telligence Corps.

Reports Missing

We went to Bielefield to try to
get a look at these reports. How-
ever, the British had heard of
them but had not seen them. They
were somewhere but nobody knew
where. Probably lying in the cor-
ner of some dark room at some
headquarters building. We never
did locate them. I certainly would
have liked to see one of them, es-
pecjally about the town of Brock-
hagen and the witnesses we inter-
rogated.

Once more we started back
home after much talk, much
questioning, and much evasion
and lying. Again we were con-
vinced.that the Germans are very
well
ell versed in evasion and
deceit. We had enough on Pohl-
mann to hang him and that made
us all feel good. Pohlmann is now
in a P.W. camp in France where
he was picked up while In hiding.
He will be extradited and tried
for murder. Our job was finished.
From there on the Wiesbaden
prosecution and trial section
would carry on.

Obedience to Orders
That niglit, while discussing the
case with dol. Haley around the
dinner table, we got into a dis-
cussion about the German fear
and respect for orders. He told us
of an incident that happened
around Dachau after the Ameri-
cans took over the place. They
had rounded up about 2,000 S.S.
men and imprisoned them. A wave
of suicides swept the prison. These
men knew they were guilty and
rather than stand trial, they put
themselves to death. This went on
for about week. The Captain in
charge of the prison was always
awakened about 2 or 3 o'clock in
the morning, when one of the S.S.
men had committed suicide. Fi-
nally, this very German-wise Cap-
tain, in order to get some sleep
and in desperation put up a no-
tice in each cell: "IT IS FORBID-
DEN TO COMMIT SUICIDE BE-
TWEEN THE HOURS OF 6 P.M.
AND 6 A.M., by order of the Com-
mandant of the Prison." Believe
it or not, there were no more sui-
cides for two weeks between those
hours. It was forbidden!
Captain Kuschner, a medic, who
was a witness at the Dachau trials
and who is a pathologist now
working with the War Crimes
Branch, examining the bodies that
are uncovered to determine cause
of death, told of an incident that
happened at Dachau also. It seems
after questioning, one of the S.S.
men took the investigator out to
a field and pointed to the spot
where a flier was buried after
being beaten to death. The body
was dug up by the prisoner and
then he asked the Captain for his
gun. The Captain asked why he
wanted it. He was answered, "To
commit suicide, my Captain." The
captain then told the interpreter
to make it clear to the prisoner
that it was verboten to commit
suicide until a confession was
signed. The prisoner was returned
to his cell. Nothing happened that
night. The next morning he asked
for pen and paper. He wrote out
his confession. One half hour later
he was found with his throat and
wrists cut. It was verboten to
commit suicide until after a con-
fession was written!
(Next week's article discloses
Hayett's random thoughts and ob-
servations.)

that the Labor Zionist movement
is building in Palestine. This
brings us to the old-new lesson
that the Jews are creating in their
land the lesson that is to be their
contribution to the whole of man-

kind. This lesson is old because it
stems directly from the mighty
font of Jewish precepts concern-
ing human relationships; it is new
IA because it takes into account the
resultant effects and evils of the
industrial revolution. Directly
from the great Prophetic stream
flow the Labor Zionist concepts of
equality and democracy. Realizing,

ZEDEK
that intelligence and ability are
purely biological accidents that do
not in least entitle one man to ex-
ploit another; that therefore every
person is entitled to the same hu-
man dignity and is of the same
human worth—the Labor Zionist
movement rests squarely upon the
all-important principles of self-
labor and cooperation. No man
may exploit his fellow man no
matter what the excuse or ra-
tionalization.
Democracy is the other great
pillar upon which the Labor Zion-
ist movement is built. But democ-
racy is extended to realm of eco-
nomics as well as encompassing
the political scene. The oligarchy
that controls the means of produc-
tion in other lands does not exist
according to the Labor Zionist
philosophy. The wealth of the na-
tion, which is extracted through
the means of production, belongs
to all people. There is no mon-
opoly of wealth as the means of
production belong to the people.
Natural resources are utilized for
the benefit of all; the land be-
longs to all; the resulting higher
standard of living is for all. La-
bor Zionism clearly realizes that
there is no reason for poverty; no
reason for depressions; for gluts,
panics, crises; no reason for
wasteful competition; no reason
for an economy of scarcity; no
reason for hunger and unemploy-
ment and economic insecurity. La-
bor Zionism knows that if there
is no economic democracy there is
no political democracy. Just as a
political oligarchy must not be
allowed to exist because it men-
aces the good of all; so an eco-
nomic oligarchy must not be al-
lowed to exist. The Labor Zionist
movement knows that nature
holds within her bosom enough
for all; that it is only because of
lustful and greedy elements that
the great stream of natural wealth
is checked, and not permitted to
reach the great majority of peo-
ple. The Labor Zionist movement

Labor Zionism has as its core, as
its very heart .. this goal: the re-
demption and regeneration of the
Jewish nation by our own hands
in order that it may burn its mes-
sage of a new life of freedom and
equality on the soul of the world.
The essence of Labor Zionism is
the rebuilding of a national mi-
nority that has suffered perpetu-
ally because of this minorityship;
that has been buffeted about by
the nations of the earth. Labor
Zionism means the re-Invigoration
of a people with a wonderful his-
toric and cultural heritage . . a
people who, despite their mighty
achievements, have been scorned,
spat upon, and defiled since the
time of their dispersion. Labor
Zionism has felt intensely the bit-
ter irony of all history; that the
people who gave to the world such
lofty concepts as have never be-
fore been surpassed in the annals
of humankind have been beset up-
on by forces who claim adher-
ence to those same concepts; that
the givers of the word of peace
and human dignity have through-
out the centuries felt the iron fist
of an essentially pagan diaspora
close relentlessly about them.

ZIONIST PARTIES

Hatred Never Dies
Time and again has the libera-
tion of the human spirit been pro-
claimed; time and again has hu-
man brotherhood been ordained—
yet the "great hatred" for the
Jew never dies. One "emancipa-
tion" after the other has ended
in stark and utter tragedy for the
Jew and his culture. Throughout
the centuries has the Jew been
promised freedom; yet ever has he
been betrayed; ever has he been
stifled politically, economically, or
culturally. The Labor Zionist move-
ment has sensed the great irony
fully; has learned once and for
all the great lesson of history:
that the Jews must redeem them-
selves. The pious hopes for world
liberation have been and are emp-
ty, meaningless words as far as
the Jew is concerned. Thus the
Labor Zionist movement realizes
that the Jew must sieze his own
destiny; must create his own

culture, contribute to the better.
