ZIONIST PARTIES

Mizrachi

By L W. KEYS

Mizrachi is a world movement
of religious Zionists, with head-
quarters in Jerusalem; it forms
an integral portion of the Zionist
World Organization. The Ameri-
can branch of the Mizrachi move-
ment (consisting of the Mizrachi
Organization of America, the Miz-
rachi Women's Organization and
Hapoel Hamizrachi, religious labor
organization) comprises tens of
thousands of members, organizei
throughout the country into three
hundred groups; and it counts its
sympathizers in orthodox Jewry In
the hundreds of thousands.
Mizrachi's chief activities are
concerned with the mobilization
of religious Jewry in behalf of
Zionist endeavor and the imple-
mentation in Eretz Israel of its
specific religious approach to
the national revival of the Jew-
ish ;people. It has organized col-
onies, wherein a laboring gen-
eration worships (kid, works the
land and enjoys the fruit of its
labors; a school system wherein
nearly twenty thousand children
cling to the unbroken chain of
Israel's religious tradition and
sacred culture; institutions and
centers for training young peo-
ple in agriculture and industry,
and in a life liaised on the pre-
cepfa of the Torah.

to the view that Eretz Israel must
he recreated as a free and demo-
cratic Jewish Commonwealth. It
sees in Zionism not merely the
response of a people, oppressed
and harassed, seeking refuge from
its persecutors, but also the re-
awakening of an ancient people,
selected by God as permanent and
eternal inhabitants of Eretz Is-
rael, Land of the Jews (Genesis
xii, 7; xxvi, 4; xxviii, 13), to exe-
cute an historic obligation running
through all Holy Writ, to fulfill
the pledge of exiled Israel, sol-
emnly imposed by the waters of
Babylon; "If I forget thee, 0 Jer-
usalem, Let my right hand forget
its cunning" (Psalms, cxxxvii, 5).
Jews Faithful
Jews throughout the w o r
have at all times and through
every vicissitude remained faith-
ful to this ancient oath. It was
Eretz Israel which drew a long
and ceaseless procession of Rab-
bis, students, scholars and saints
toward the spot which was at a
later day to be reconstituted as
the land of the Jews — Eretz
Israel. Even after overwhelming
physical power deprived Israel of
independence, the Maccabeans
Bar Kochba and their successors
made heroic attempts to regain
national freedom and independ-
ence. Nor has the longing for
and the faith in national restor-
ation been affected by the de-
vastation of their country and
the oppression of the Jews as the
result of these abortive and

liberties. Three times daily the
Jew prays for the rehabilitation
of Zion; indeed, all Jewish pray-
ers are permeated with a yearn-

ing for that hallowed territory.
The - Mizrachi believes and trusts
that with the rebuilding of Zion
in accordance with our ancient
traditions and culture there
would ensue the regeneration of
the Jewish people, to the great-
er good of all humanity; and

that Zion would be transformed
into 4 center whence would ra-
diate the word of God, with uni-
versal freedom, justice and hu-
man brotherhood in accordance
with the teaching of our proph-
ets and sages.

Mizrachi does not yield to any
of the isms or ideologies of the
Diaspora and certainly would not
want to see them transplanted in-
to our homeland. The thinking
that has brought only misery and
devastation has no place in our
national culture. We believe that
our customs, mores and tradi-
tions have much to offer our peo-
ple and more to groping human-
ity. Our motto, "The Land of Is-
rael for the People of Israel, ac-
cording to the Torah of Israel."
