At first glance, geology would appear to be just about the last
science in the world that would lend itself to bettering cultural re-
lations between the Jews of Palestine and the world outside. Yet,
through the brilliant work and unofficial statesmanship of Professor
Leo Picard, head of the Geological Institute of the Hebrew Univer-
sity in Jerusalem, the position of Jewry in Palestine has been greatly
improved in the past decade.
In this country for a few weeks prior to flying back to Pales-
