• PLAIN TALK
Detroit Hadassah Membership
Luncheon Set for Tuesday, Sept. 18
(Continued from page four)
fate of Palestine is more promis-
g without politics and political
ntroversy. He has in mind the
:lost unthinkable possibility that
,e might in time set himself up
as a farmer (Segal is an inveter-
ate city guy and never would
amount to anything as a farmer.
He likes the steam heat of an
apartment.)
But suppose Segal were really
Atilt out to be a farmer and bought
"a farm somewhere in his native
country. Even before settling
there he made an announcement
to all the neighboring farmers:
'I, Segal, am coming to settle
among you. Because I am Segal
I expect ultimately to run the
township in which my farm is
situated. I'll be the boss of the
township."
He guesses the neighbors
wouldn't like this. They would
probably do everything they
could to make his farm life miser-
wble in order to get him out of
there. Their boys would throw
stones at his windows. They
would chase all the rabbits into
his cabbage patch. They might
strew salt on his cornfield.
"Who," they would ask, "does
he think he is? He wanting to
take charge of our township! To
hell with Segal!"
Mindful of this, Zionist Segal
doesn't think it's for the good of
Zion in Palestine for Zionists to
lay to the Arabs: "We're going
to take this country over. We'll
make our own state here—a Jew-
ish state, and what are you
going to do about that?"
Membership will be the most
important item on the agenda of
the joint board meeting of the
Detroit Hadassah's four groups,
at a luncheon at 12:30 p.m., Sept.
18, at Hotel Stotler. This is the
first joint meeting of the season
and attendance is limited to board
and committee members. Arrange-
ments are in charge of Mrs. Har-
ry L. Jones, program chairman.

GOOD NEIGHBORS
Zionist Segal doesn't think
that's the way to handle neigh-
bors especially if you are think-
ing of going into farming ex-
tensively, as in Palestine. In fact,
the first essential thing for sue-
; cessful farming is to have peace
'with your neighbors. Wheat,
olives and oranges can't be cul-
tivated so well if you nave to
carry a gun in one hand and a
hoe in the other.
If Segal thought of being a
farmer in his country he could
start out by establishing good
terms with his neighbors. They
would know him as a man who
wanted to go along cooperatively
with them for the benefit of the
township.
Of course, he wouldn't even
ibring up the matter of who was
to run the township. He would
take it for granted that all the
inhabitants should have an equal
part in the government of the
to wnship; all together for the
common good without anybody
having any special privilege.
.Thus, in peace, he would grow
h s i
corn, wheat and alfalfa to
plenty.
Good Zionist Segal believes
that the good of Zion requires
that Jews in Palestine go along in
political union with Arabs—in
the same kind of political union
that exists among the many
varieties of Americans. It re-
quires that Jews meet on com-
mon democratic political ground
with Arabs instead of trying to
stand on their own exclusive
ground, as in a separate Jewish
state.
Otherwise, the trees Segal
red for his good relative—he
a cousin—won't grow well
J may even perish by the de-
struction of
warfare. He was a
ns
gentleman whose memory de-
he
serves to stand a long time and
it would be a pity to see his trees
fall because of warfare between
by J ews and Arabs.

viewed singly . . . It is true that
the physical injuries inflicted on
the victims are minor, and the
property damage not very large
. . . But there is a pattern—an
identical pattern—used by the
culprits . . And this pattern,
whether certain timid Jewish
souls admit it or not is one of
definite religious and political an-
ti-Semitism . . Still more sig-
nificent is this: In the localities
where these incidents occur the
police and press insist on calling
these
anti-Semitic
onslaughts
"hoodlumism"
and
"youthful
pranks" .. . So let's resolve to
call a spade a spade in this new
year of 5706, and to label these
incipient pogroms as what they
are . . . The only way to destroy
anti-Semitism is to fight it in the
open .. .

WARNING . . •
No, Victor Riesel is not exag-
gerating when he warns us that a
gigantic political campaign by the
old America-Firsters is on the
way .. . John T. Flynn and Upton
Close have already begun a no-
tional smear campaign against the
memory of Franklin D. Roosevelt
. . . They will try to hammer into
the heads of millions of Ameri-
cans a fantastic tale that Roose-
velt, as the tool of international
Jewish bankers, was responsible
for the war, the dead, the maimed
and the jobless . . . After Flynn,
Close & Co. will have their prop-
aganda going Gerald K. Smith'
will inaugurate his political cam-
paign, which will feature Huey I
Long's share-the-wealth proposals,
theTownsend plan, and of course
Father Coughlin's "Social Jus-
tice" principles ... Smith, Flynn,
Close & Co. believe that the coun-
try will go for this all-out pros-
perity and pension program hook,
line and sinker . . . No Riesel is
not exaggerating . , .
