As an example of the confused
situation which prevails in the
South American countries as far
as Jewish life is concerned, Dr.
Margoshes pointed to the fact
that while in Buenos Aires the
publication of Yiddish newspapers
is permitted, although the public
use of the Yiddish language is
barred, the reverse is the case in

in Buenos Aires to help promote
Jewish cultural affairs. Branches
will also be maintained in New
York, Jerusalem and Warsaw,
and works will be published in
Yiddish, Hebrew, English, Span-
ish and Portuguese. Volumes al-
ready planned for publication in-
clude works by Menahem Borat-
sha, Maurice Samuel, Ludwig
Lewisohn, and a history of the
Jewish communities in America
by the young historian Boleslav
Levin. The undertaking will be
directed by the Department of
Culture and Education of the
World Jewish Congress. The Con-
gress, Dr. Margoshes said, will
also take over the Jewish Sem-
inary in Buenos Aires and reor-
ganize it so as to serve all of
Latin America.

Brazil where Yiddish newspapers
may not be published although
there is no bait on Yiddish ad-
dresses at public meetings,
Dr. Margoshes declared that in
a lengthy conversation with
Adolph Berle, the American Am-
basador to Brazil, Mr. Berle
showed a great understanding of -
the Jewish situation in Smith
America.

BUDAPEST — The generous
relief assistance of the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee is invaluable
to the thousands of Hungary's
Jews who require help, Charles
Lutz, Swiss Consul in Budapest
until last April, recently told the
J.D.C. representative in Istambul.
J.D.C. aid is now providing
kitchens in the Jewish sections of
the city and in Jewish hospitals
and institutions, Mr. Lutz stated.
He estimated that of the 800,000
Jews in Budapest as of March,
1999, only 150,000 to 180,000
remain in Budapest with others
outside that city.
About 40 percent of Hungary's
Jews are in desperate need.
About 200,000 were sent to labor
camps in Germany and another
250,000 were taken to the front
for forced labor. The rest have
been either killed or have dis-
appeared.
