JDC Opens Home
For Greek Orphans

ATHENS — The Esther or-
phanage, a home near Athens for
Jewish children who lost their
parents when the Germans over-
ran Greece, has just been open-
ed by the Joint Distribution Corn-
mittee. It is the first Jewish chil-
dren's home to function since the
German invasion of Greece.
J.D.C. has also provided funds
for a summer health program for
about 200 needy children. In ad-
dition, J.D.C. set up emergency
shelter programs for homeless
Jews, arranged care for the aged,
equipped a medical dispensary
and provided funds for the re-
pair of schools and Jewish com-
munal institutions.

live a fuller and more intense
Jewish life. I was asked in all
quarters for the help of the Unit-
ed States Jewry in sending them
rabbis, teachers, religious books
and secular books. This is urgent-
ly necessary since these Jewish
settlements are afraid that their
very Jewish existence is in dan-
ger of obliteration. The process
of Hispanization is very great.
The number of mixed marriages
in the smaller Latin American
countries already exceeds the
number of Jewish marriages."
Dr. Margoshes reported that
the World Jewish Congress was
making marked headway in its in-
fluence and organization in South
America but declared that its
work was being hampered by the
tactics of the Joint Distribution
Committee, "which is everywhere
carrying on a planned campaign
against the Congress to the point
where South American Jews re-
gard the J.D.C. as less interested
in raising money for relief pur-
poses than in alienating the local
Jewish population from the Con-
gress idea." The same charge is
made against the American Jew-
ish CoMmittee, whose representa-
tives, Dr. Margoshes stated, "ap-
pear in South America with the
most fantastic and irresponsible
stories of the Congress."
Summarizing the accomplish-
ments of his mission Dr. Mar-
goshes said that he had been able
to establish a Brazilian Jewish
Congress which for the first time
unites the 150,000 Jews in Brazil
of all political and cultural
groups. He revealed, too, that the
World Jewish Congress is estab-
lishing a Jewish publishing house
