With the beginning of the war
Detroit became overnight one of
the most important cities in the
world. The responsibility of pro-
ducing the weapons for victory
rested on the shoulders of its 2,-
000,000 citizens and on the capa-
city of its hundreds of factories.
To Mayor Jeffries and his ad-
ministration fell the duty of keep-
ing Detroit on the job; supplying
the power for its machines, guard-
ing its workshops from fire and
the attacks of the enemy, watch-
ing over the health and welfare
of its citizens, transporting them
to their work, providing them
with places to relax and play.
The nation recognizes that De-
troit's fire protection and munic-
ipal transportation services have
been as good as or better than
any other. Detroit has been the
healthiest and the safest from
traffic accidents. Her handling of
such war created problems as ju-
venile delinquency has been among
the most progressive anywhere.
Under Jeffries' personal super-
vision the blueprints for postwar
projects have been prepared and
much of the money raised. Almost
$23,000,000 in surpluses have been
earmarked to begin capital im-
provements as son as men and
materials become available. More
than any other man, Mayor Jeff-
ries is acquainted with the intri-
cate problems of planning tomor-
