The Cry at Oswego
Building a New World
and work. Oswego camp was not such.
It was simply an interment camp, in the
final analysis. And the fact is that Switz-
erland and Sweden provided havens for
many thousands of more refugees than
we did, without making the same fuss
about it.
The people of Fort Ontario in their
petition to the government point out that
while all of the inmates of the Shelter
signed a statement that they would re-
turn to their homeland, "it does not seem
fair to enforce commitments which are
inhumane and which are accepted only in
desperation." "Many of the inmates," it
was further pointed out, "cannot return,
for approximately one-third have been
deprived of citizenship in the countries of
their origin."
If these citizens of Fort Ontario, who
have now been close to the inmates of
the Shelter for a year, feel that they
should be permitted to remain in the
United States and become citizens, we be-
lieve their opinion should go far with the
government. If anybody is a judge in the
matter, they have the right to be.
These Oswego people have been
through a great deal of agony. That is
why men commit suicide. That is why
men are driven insane. We have done
them a good turn, but it cannot be said
that we have been overly generous.
Uncle Sam should remember that great
statue, standing in the harbor of New
York, beckoning to the oppressed of the
world! We must act in this matter, at
least in the spirit of that statue.
Air Travel to Palestine
The British Airways, says a report,
have inaugurated a daily air trip between
Palestine and England. The trip will take
10 hours. The cost for the round trip is
approxiately $380.
Doubtless similar trips will soon be
available for Americans. It formerly re-
quired a voyage of about some 15 or 16
days to reach Palestine. Doubtless within
the next year or two Americans will be
flying to Palestine in 15 to 16 hours.
This is the miracle of air travel, and
we may expect that this speeding up of
the time of travel will have enormous
effects on the development of Palestine
and at the same time will make Jewry
outside of Palestine, and the world at
large, more conscious of Palestine.
It will take no longer to travel to Pal-
estine by air from the United States than
it takes to go today by train from New
York to Detroit. In other words, air travel
for practical purposes removes Palestine
from "way out there" and places her
nearer to points of the United States than
many points of the United States are
near to each other.
There is consolation in this. If the
San Francisco Conference, and other po-
litical bodies, are going slow in conceding
Jewish demands, science and invention
are working for the Jews. Just now, of
course, it would be rash to make any pre-
security, and therefore did not permit any
"extraneous matter" for discussion. And
in the main, let us say, the blue print for
this structure has been admirably drawn.
The foundations are all plainly labelled,
"Justice, Liberty, Freedom, Economic Se-
curity, Human Rights, etc." If we take
the labelling for the facts, we should all
sit back contented and satisfied with the
greatest achievement for the advancement
of mankind in history.
Yet it is with some apprehension that
we survey some of those who placed such
soul stirring words in the forthcoming
charter. We see, foremost, the Arabs, the
Iraqians, the Egyptians and the Argen-
tines. These noble protagonists for the
human rights, who have not yet been able
to remove the odor of nazism and fas-
cism from their garments, still (Argen-
tina, for example) maintain concentration
camps for liberals and Jews, ratified the
introduction of the words "Liberty, Jus-
tice, Freedom and Human Rights" in the
charter!
To draw an analogy, the delegations at
San Francisco were employed in an archi-
tectural job. They marked down in their
specifications certain kinds of lumber, cer-
tain kinds of nails and rivets—all of them
"standard brands". The contractors are
now ready to start erecting this brave,
new edifice. Can they be trusted to stick
to the specifications? Will the archi-
tects be permitted to supervise the job?
And will the supervisors of these jobs be
those very nations now represented in
San Francisco who think that liberty
means license, that human rights means
rights for every one but the Jew, the
Negro, or other minority races; that eco-
nomic security means security for cartels,
that freedom means permission to exploit
the helpless?
Will Criminals Escape?
The tactics of the Allies in delaying
opening the trials of the Nazi war crim-
inals is a disappointment to all. Time is
on the side of these criminals. As the war
recedes, the memory of their crimes grows
fainter.
Should the majority of these war crim-
inals escape, then all the oppressed peo-
ples of Europe and liberals everywhere
will feel that there is no justice. There
will be a terrific letdown and the prestige
of Russia will be greatly enhanced.
Do Allied statesmen fear the revela-
tions of these Nazi master criminals?
Where is the Black Book of Nazi Atroci-
ties which a committee of Jewish writers
and artists is sponsoring?
A series of articles in PM last week
revealed that the anti-Semites, the Hate-
lers are extremely active in the United
States. They are busy spreading their
poison under the guise of nationalism.
Many of these agitators were defendants
in the sedition trial which was dismissed
because of the death of the trial judge.
We should urge the new Attorney Gen-
eral to bring these accused to trial.
Plain Talk
BY AL SEGAL
After Hitler
A gentleman called on me to
ask what are we going to do
now that Hitler is through?. "I
mean," he explained, "what are
we, the Jews, going to do about
ourselves?"
Oh, I replied, that's something!
Really, a lot of us have felt
hotly Jewish mainly on account
of Hitler and now that he's
through what are we going to do
about our Jewish selves? Most
Jewish activities have revolved
around Hitler.
Yes, the gentleman said, some
of the citizens hadn't been feel-
ing very Jewish until Hitler
came along and made them feel
that way. He was rather ashamed
of the idea of feeling Jewish just
because somebody whips you with
a lash on account of your being
Jewish.
He had in mind a case in an-
other city. In that city there is
a certain Jewish man who has
become a local big-shot because
of Hitler. Until 1933 he had no
Jewish interests at all. That was
the year Hitler came in. Being
Jewish was an identity he could
take or let alone; he let it pretty
much alone.
Hitler converted him, you
might say. He became a Jewish
leader in his communitty. Let's
call him Mr. Zilch, for short.
Zilch was suddenly an outstand-
ing figure in Jewry. Zilch for
chairman of this drive and Zilch
for chairman of that drive. Zilch
for toastmaster at the communal
dinners. Zilch had become an
active Jew, a flaming Jew, hop-
ping mad under the lash.
Zilch's being a Jew was a mat-
ter that had to do altogether
with that so-and-so Hitler. When
he spoke at the banquet tables
Hitler was his theme. To do
something about Hitler was the
main Jewish mission. There was
nothing else in Jewish life, it
scented, and, for that matter,
what else did Zilch know?
- The Jews in his town came to
look up to Zilch as the model
Jew of the community. Yes, they
said, if there were only more
Jews like Zilch! They gave him
a testimonial dinner. All the
speakers said that the local Ju-
daism was fortunate to have a
man like Zilch. He knew how to
handle the Jewish enemies. The
way he could lay 'cm out.
Many Zilches
There are a lot of Zilches
around who have been feeling
hot with the pain Hitler made
them suffer, but what's to become
of them when there is no more
terrific Jewish pain, let's hope,
and no Hitler to swing the lash
on them, thank God.
The gentleman was troubled
on account of a great many Jew-:
who, with Hitler gone, may lee:
there's no more reason to keep
on being earnestly Jewish. He
laughed: Hitler had been like a
