TRIESTE (Palcor).—No trag-
edy is more complete than the
catastrophe which has befallen
European Jewry during th e
years of Nazi domination, I can
confirm after one week's visit in
the leading centers of Croatia
and Slovenia, together with Noch-
olas Read, Canadian Government
film correspondent who made a
pictorial record of the ruins
where once thrived 75,000 Jews
now believed to have been re-
duced to no more than 5,000.
In Fiume and Susak 40 Jews
have registered; in Zagreb, about
150 have registered, apart from
1,000 mixed-marriage Jews. Inn
Sarajevo, no more than 5 per
cent of the original 10,000 Jews
have survived.
Grimmest reminder of the fas-
cist tyranny is the murder camp
of Jasenovac on the Sava River,
surrounded by swampland and
forests, in the heart of Croatia.
The Yugoslav Commission in-
vestigating fascist atrocities esti-
mated that about 700,000 were
murdered here by the Ustachi-
Serbs, Croats, Jews and gypsies
—over a period of three years.
Death here was not scientifi-
cally organized as at Oswiecim
or other German camps—no gas,
shooting was a rarity. The most
popular method was killing by
knife and hammes.
"With my own eyes," said
Drpsombic Milan, a Croat resi-
dent of Jasenovac who worked in
the prison camp for one year, "I
saw how thousands of men, wom-
en and children had their throats
cut by the Ustachi who would
wipe the knives, dripping with
human blood, with their mouths."
The Yugoslav Commission con-
firms many cases of cannibalism.
1 saw dozens of decomposing
bodies of men, women and chil-
dren, drifting face downwards
along the river bank near the
railroad platform still red with
human blood. Transports, arriv-
ing at the rate of two or three
daily at the Jasenovac station,
were shunted to this platform
where the victims were bound,
murdered and thrown into the
river. I also saw bodies of young
girls with their abdomens torn
open. A specially constructed
kiln was used for burning the
victims alive. Some were mur-
dered by slow degrees, their
limbs severed one by one.
Jews and Gentiles alike treat
anti-Semitism as if it would be
a force in nature which at best
can be mastered but not eradi-
cated. The subject is also treated
like a mysterious phenomenon in
Human behavior.
"It is human nature," many
learned doctors say, "to discrim-
inate against, even hate, minof-
ity groups." This is a positive
falsehood. Observations prove
that the opposite is true. It can
be seen that young, naive chil-
dren, before being agitated by
doctrines, are warmly associating
with other children, regardless of
the religion into which they have
been born.
As they grow older these an-
gelic little innocent human be-
ings learn in the Sunday Schools
from "God's Word" that Jews
are a wicked people. That they
have forever connived and con-
spired against Jesus and the
Apostles. Out of "God's Word"
is also read to them that the
Jewish rabbis are hypocrites and
from some pulpits is preached
that the Jewish people are "tiv?
Congregation of Satan". This ex-
plains why so many very pious
Christians are Jew haters.
