KLAGENFURT, Austria (Pal-
cor).—Looking for Jews in Aus-
tria is like looking for needles
in a haystack. Several days'
search in portions of Carinthia
and Syria, now occupied by the
Fifth Corps of the 8th Army,
revealed 98 Jews here and a
handful in Spittal and Lienz.
At the railway station here,
residing in trucks, I found 98
Jews, almost all from Budapest,
Hungary, and two girls from
Tarnow and one from Cracow,
Poland. The Hungarians are all
technicians and craftsmen, de-
ported from their homes in April,
1944, for work with the Hun-
garian forces.
Twenty thousand Tarnow Jews
were wiped out by the Germans,
in addition to Jews that poured
in from other ghettos. Jews were
burnt alive in the square. Those
who were to be eliminated in
nearby woods were said to belong
to "Himmlers' Fahrt".
One of the girls said: "I saw
children thrown into the air
like footballs and shot. Women
and girls were stripped naked
and dogs let loose to torment
them. In Cracow a special tor-
ture invented by the Nazis for
women was a "gynaecological in-
spection.' Why were we not
dead, I would often say, but it
was f y brother, who in the
ghetto of Tarnow, begged me to
escape. 'Stay alive,' he said, 'so
that you may tell the world
what has happened. We Jews
must live.' This is what has kept
me alive. But now we feel utter-
ly broken and don't know what
to do."
