CINCINNATI — With the dis-
solution of the United Jewish
Appeal, the Board of Direct-
ors of the Council of Jew-
ish Federations and Welfare
Funds, meeting here last week-
end, devoted much of its atten-
tion to efforts to prevent a
break-up of the joint campaign
in which the United Palestine
Appeal, Joint Distribution Com-
mittee and the National Refugee
Service have taken part for sev-
eral years and to consider steps
which welfare funds throughout
the country can take to insure
maximum funds for the relief of
European Jewry and the develop-
ment of Palestine.
These efforts climaxed the dis-
cussions of the past several
weeks between the officers of the
Council and the UPA and JDC.
Numerous alternative proposals
for a formula of agreement were
discussed by a special committee
of the Council's Board.
Welfare Fund leaders present
at the meeting were unanimous
in stressing the importance of
continuing the joint campaign to
achieve maximum funds for over-
seas needs and to avoid any im-
pairment of community solidar-
ity which might follow as a
result of competitive appeals.
The break among the ma-
jor overseas agencies was
the one dark cloud in the pros-
pects for even more generous
giving by the Jews of America,
according to the reports on fund
raising prospects for 1945 ub-
mitted by Abe Srere of Detroit,
chairman of the Council Com-
mittee on Financing of Welfare
Program. Mr. Srere's - report in.
dicated that if the UJA situa-
tion were not disturbed the peak
fund-raising achieved in 1944
would be surpassed in the cur-
rent year.
