DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle
TRICT LY CONFIDENTIAL . ..
by Phineas J. Biron
AFTERMATH:
Now it can be told that among
those who took a very active part
in drumming up hate against
Roosevelt in the national election
was Edward E. Rumely of New
York City . . . Mr. Rumely was
a paid agent of the German gov-
ernment during the first world
war, was sentenced as a German
agent and served time in the At-
lantic penitentiary . . . During
the 1944 campaign he was direct-
or of the Committee for Consti-
tutional Government, an organi-
zation sponsored by publisher
Frank E. Gannett, which cam-
paigned for Governor Dewey .. .
And Rumely is now under indict-
ment for contempt of court for
refusing to divulge to a Senate
Committee the sources of the
funds for his campaign expendi-
tures . . . Advice to the Repub-
lican Party: Now that the 1944
campaign is over it would be a
good idea for you to take time
out to cleanse your house of the
gentry who, as gleefully report-
ed by Washington columnist John
O'Donnell, supported Thomas E.
Dewey because they were "damn-
ed sick and tired" of "turning
the country over to Frankfurter,
Rosenman, Hillman and Dave
Niles" . . . Which reminds us
to warn you to put no credence
in this same Mr. O'Donnell's pre-
election prediction that a fourth
Roosevelt term would see Mrs.
Anna M. Rosenberg of the WMC
in the post of Secretary of La-
bor . .. Not that Mrs. R. might-
n't make good—but Mr O'Don-
nell's announcement was made
for the specific purpose of gar-
nering anti-Semitic votes for
Dewey.
WE DOFF OUR HAT:
Orchids are due President
Roosevelt for his beautiful and
couragerous gesture on the eve
of the election . . . Because the
Republican campaign made Henry
Morgenthau its target as the
author of a "hard peace" plan
for Germany, Roosevelt insisted
that the Secretary of the Treas-
ury accompany him on his auto-
mobile tour through his own
Hyde Park district . . . The Pres-
ident chost this means of expres-
sing his personal esteem for Mor-
genthau . .. Hats off, too, to
the Permanent Fair Emplayment
Practice Committee, of which the
Reverend Allan Knight Chalmers
and A. Philip Randolph are co-
chairmen . . . The PFEPC is do-
ing a great job toward the elim-
ination of discrimination in em-
ployment . . . In its first 18
months of activity it has handled
nearly 10,000 individual com-
complaints.
LISTEN HERE:
It's time to look seriously into
the activities of C. Leon De Ar-
yan of Atascadero, Calif. . .
This gentleman is the editor of
"The Broom," a pro-Fascist
newspaper . . . "The Broom"
was named in July, 1942, Fed-
eral indictment as one of the
agencies participating in a plot
against the United States armed
forces—yet it still circulates . .
If you want to be well-informed
on the extent of Fascism in Ar-
gentina, get Ricardo Setaro's
booklet "Argentina Fascist Head-
quarters," published by 'the Coun-
cil for Pan-American Democracy
. . . There's hope that a play
called "El Judio" (The Jew) may
never be seen on the boards in
Mexico City . . . The city gov-
ernment has been asked, by the
Unofficial Committee against Rac-
ial Discrimination, to bar the
drama because of its anti-Semitic
content . .. We join Hollywood's
Hedda Hopper in wondering why
the screen doesn't bring forth a
good film on a Jewish theme .. .
Hedda reports that not long ago
Sid Silvers had a wonderful story
about a Jewish boy in the war.
and interest in it ran high among
Metro producers—until one day
the idea came up at an executive
meeting . . . Since the theme
has been smothered in dead sil-
ence, which has also been the
fate of other Jewish stories of
late . . . Is Hollywood afraid to
remind America that Jews exist,
and therefore leaving the job to
the Gerald K. Smiths?
JEWISH NEWS:
The first edition of "Chaim
Weizmann: Statesman, Scientist,
Builder of the Jewish Common-
wealth," which will be published
on Nov. 27, is already sold out.
. . . Meyer W. Weisgal, who edit-
ed the book, will be in Palestine
by the time you read this . . .
The postponement to Nov. 26 of
the conference of the World Jew-
ish Congress, to be held at At-
lantic City, is regarded as inter-
fering seriously with the second
session of the American Jewish
Conference, opening at Pittsburgh
on Dec. 2. Did you know that
over 400 Jewish refugee families
have been settled on American
land, as farmers, in 13 states, by
the Jewish Agricultural Society?
ABOUT PEOPLE:
There's one building in Alsace
which the U.S. Air Force NVon't
bomb if it can be at all avoided.
. . . That building is the property
of an American, who was born in
that house . . . His name: Lt.-
Col. William Wyler of the U.S.
Air Force—the movie director
who gave us "Memphis Belle" .. .
Pianist Vladimir Horowitz amazes
people with his knowledge of
sports events and personalities.
. . . His art doesn't give him
much time to attend such events
—but he keeps up-to-date by
reading the sports pages of his
newspaper most attentively . . .
Mrs. Harry Bauman of Los An-
geles, active leader in Zionist
affairs, was awarded, by your col-
umnist, the title of the most
charming lady at the Zionist con-
vention at Atlantic City last
month . . . The theater now has
its fourth - generation Hammer-
stein . . . She's Sue, daughter of
Oscar Hammerstein 2nd and thus
great-granddaughter of the orig-
inal Oscar, and she's in the chor-
us of Billy Rose's ambitious new
production "The Seven Lively
Arts" (no relation, incidentally,
to our own Seven Arts) . . .
From Hollywood comes word that
Charlie Chaplin has started work.
on his new firm and that his wife,
Oona O'Neill, will be . his leading
lady.
