LEOPOLD ZUNZ

(Continued from Page 8)

Justice. Judaism was to him es-
sentially a religious culture; in
political matters all things should
be equal. Ile regarded the strug-
gle for liberty for the Jew as
bound up inextricably with the
struggle for universal freedom.
A w hole volume of his writings
is devoted to general political
problems, to the advance of the
idea of universal suffrage and
the attainment of democracy. He
hailed the revolution of 1848 in
i a notable speech; he lived to
witness the granting of full civic
rights to the Jews of Germany

DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE end The Legal Chronicle

in 1869.
His long life spanned the age
of transition in Jewish life. Ile
found Judaism bound by thi
chains of tradition, and lived to
see numerous institutions and
hundreds of scholars carrying on
the work of reinterpreting its an-
cient teaching in modern forms
all over the world. He found his
people degraded and disregarded
and lived to see their achieve-
ments and their spirit acknowl-
edged by thinking people every-
where. And he had the satisfac-
tion of knowing that a large part
of this change had been wrought
by his own efforts and by tilr
influence of the Science of Juda-
ism which he had inaugurated.

ROSH HASHONAH GREETINGS •

Such was Leopold Zunz, a
man of unflinching moral princi-
ples and great scholarly accom-
plishments. Today, 150 years af-
ter his birth, the importance of
his life and works can be amply
seen. The entire shape and spirit
of modern Jewish thought bears
the impress of the creative force
of this pioneer of modern Jew-
ish scholarship; the paths he
opened and the ideas he con-
ceived have been followed eag-
erly by Jewish students down to
the present day. The life of
Zunz bears witness to the truth
of those words which were his
motto: Echte Wissenschaft ist
Tat erzeugend — true scholarship
is that which engenders worthy
deed.
