4,500 Jews of Rome Deported Jewish Community Britain Again Turning Down
During Nazi Reign of Terror Council Helps Ban Army of Palestinian Jews
Chief Rabbi Anton Zolli Charges Ugo Foa,
Jewish Fascist Leader, Deceived His People
NEW YORK (WNS).—"Out of
Rome's total population of 11,500
or 11,600, fully 4,500 and prob-
ably more have been deported,"
Prof. Anton Zolli, Chief Rabbi
of Rome, was quoted to have de-
clared in an interview he gave
to Herbert L. Matthews, Rome
correspondent of the New York
Times.
Mr. Matthews quoted Rabbi
Zolli as having stated that if
Ugo Fon, president of the Jewish
community and prominent Fas-
cist, had not led the Jews of
Rome to believe that the Ger-
mans would not take repressive
measures against them, many
would have fled to safety. Fol-
lowing is part of Prof. Zolli's
statement:
"During my 30 years as Chief
Rabbi in Trieste I had seen in
miniature the whole martyrology
of a Jewish community, so I knew
what Rome had to expect. The
president of the community here
was Ugo Foa, a magistrate about
50 years old, whom I do not
blame for having been a Fascist,
because he was a young man
when the movement began and he
knew no better. I was always
anti-Fascist and on theNazi
blacklist for preaching anti-Nazi
sermons in Trieste as early as
1933, but I never clashed with
Foa until it became a question
of life or death for the Jewish
community.
"When the Germans seized
Rome on Sept. 8 and 9, I held
a conference with him and his
entourage, a little clique of Jews
who believed as he did. We both
spoke Italian, but we could not
understand each other.
"So, from Sept. 10 to 18 I
went to the' synagogue and
preached every (lay to warn the
community what was going to
happen. I told them that they
should scatter, hide and close all
their businesses and administra-
tions, and until advised differ-
ently, all public services in tem-
ples were to be suspended. There
is an old Roman proverb: 'First
live, then worship God'—for only
the living can praise God. -
Gave Wrong Advice
"However, Foa gave exactly
the opposite advice to the com-
munity and said that he had had
assurances from the authorities.
He offered hope, which is 'the
last goddess,' and they believed
him, especially as they had been
lulled to security by the fact that
the Italians had always treated
the Jews well. We had been here
for more than 2,000 years and it
is difficult for us to think of
danger. The whole Italian popu-
lation has been wonderful to us.
They are divine people, but the
Germans were another matter.
