• Editor's Note—The author of the following letter, a private in the
United States Army, was one of those Yanks in the Mediter-
ranean area fortunate enough to get a furlough for the holi-
days in Palestine. In the following letter he gives his impres-
sions of his visit.
Here I am in Palestine—yet it's
hard to believe it. In the States,
some years back, I was a member
of Young Judea and I remember
the time I used to carry those blue
and white boxes for the Jewish
National Fund, collecting pennies
to buy land for the settlement of
Jews in Palestine. Somehow, de-
spite all of this, the idea of a
Jewish Homeland always appear-
ed to inc something of the far
distant future. But here I am, and
it seems that the "Future" is
here.
At first one thinks he must be
dreaming. I can understand the
psalmist's . saying, "When the
Lord returned the capitivity of I
s-
rael, we were as dreamers."
Let me illustrate. This morning
I was walking down the business
section of Tel Aviv and I looked
up at a sign to see just where I
was. The street sign was Rashi
St.
In America, Rashi was some-
thing for the bright boy in Cheder
to study over, but in Palestine
Rashi is a Street.
I walk along Rashi St. It looks
no different from the typical down-
town street of any progressive
city. Shops and stores of various
descriptions. But somehow I can-
not but believe that there is some-
thing different here. It carries
me
back historically to the days of
the founding of America—to the
days of the Pilgrims, when they
gave towns Biblical names, such
as Salem, for the Hebrew Shalom,
