T WORKED! Perhaps no
youngster had ever seen a more
beautiful sight ...
Over a little dam spilled the
water of the country ditch. The
homemade water wheel began to
turn on its rake-handle shaft.
Faster and faster it went. Next
step was to connect it to an old
coffee mill inside the woodshed.
Pebbles were poured into the
churning mill. They sparked and
crackled like a Fourth of July dis-
play, grinding noisily into sand to
be used later for a casting mold.
This water wheel was the first mov-

ing device created by Henry Ford!
Meantime, somewhere inside his
inquiring mind, a dream was
struggling to shape itself. A dream
of other wheels that would one day
turn to lighten the burdens of
farm and industry . . . to change
the transportation of the nation.
Down the years, from water
wheels to watches, to steam engines,
to gasoline engines, Henry Ford's
lively interest in wheels progressed.
The rest is history—the history of
America's automobile industry.

FORD MOTOR COMPANY

Yet the thought and spirit that
prompted that long-ago experiment
with the water wheel have never
changed at Ford Motor Company.
You still find here the ingenuity that
is not afraid to be original . . . the
wanting-to-find-out-for-oneself that
always makes for progress.
Today, this philosophy and the
skills developed through more than
40 years are being applied to Amer-
ica's vital needs. From this will arise
new techniques to serve the nation
even better when Ford resumes pro-
duction of sturdy, comfortable trans-
portation, priced within reach of the
greatest number. As Henry Ford has
said: "Our times are primitive. True
progress is yet to come."
