ling or a true man in Israel.
No! To live to 125 years for
that? . . . "I should say not,"
said the weakling Segal.
His pusillanimous spirit desired
only peace. His timid nature con-
ceived an easy way of Jewish
life in which Jews would let each
other alone. In his total lack of
aggressiveness he thought it was
being Jewish enough if a man
lived a good life and despised no
one in particular and knew Ju-
daism as a good way of life not
a battlefield.
Mr. Segal decided that when
the doctors came around with
Professor Bogomoletz's serum he
would say, "No, gentlemen, I
don't • think I care to live 125
years. Take it away. And, please,
gentlemen, don't give your serum
to any of the fighting leaders in
Israel. It would be awful to let
them live 125 years and keep up
the destructive battles. Please,
gentlemen, do me a favor: Don't
let them have it—for the sake of
my granddaughter Ellen whose
Jewish life I should like to see
lived in peace after I have gone."
